For soem reason, every time I ran GP utilities to upgrade the company, GP utilities starts and I am able to select the companies to upgrade. After that the "Server Installation" box stops to respond. I have restarted my computer several times, added new memory but nothing is cooking.
I have 4G of RAM.
Can someone help?
How do I even tell what is causing the unresponsiveness.

I know that this is a really old thread and the only reason to update is that 'just leaving it' does not always solve the problem
In our case while it acts the same, it is not the cause of the problem.
We are building an offsite system for a client for processing files related to 'legal proceedings' and we needed to be able to prove that the data was frozen, so an off site system with only limited access was the best way.
Anyway, we built the server and during the restoring of the databases, we restored a database from the BAK file that we had not 'built' in Dynamics first. This caused the Dynamics system fits and it did not know what to do. So no amount of time - in fact left for over 8 hours - did not nothing to resolve the problem.
As soon as the 'restored' database was removed the GP Utilities ran as expected - instantly and without hesitation.
So, if you end up with a situation like this where Utiliites appears to be frozen, be sure to have a look at the underlying databases and make sure that there is nothing wrong with them.
Just my two bits worth. Have a great day.
I'm glad that the issue is resolved.
And yes, currently there is no way for the installer utility to know what version (service pack) your databases are at because the installer doesn't access the databases. I suppose it could, and then warn you if you are installing a service pack that is incompatible with the version of the database you are running.

You are right. I left it long enough (30 minutes or so) and it came back to life. I also noticed that it freezes when resizing etc or when screen saver comes on.
A second point, I think that you if you install the wrong(or older) hotfix, patch,or service pack, this happens as well. I think Microsoft should warn you before applying the patch, hotfix, service pack. Instead the update installs with no issues and you get problems when running GP utilities.
So what you are saying is that when it starts installing the databases it stops responding? Have you checked to see if there is anything going on behind the scenes when it says the program is not responding. I have found multiple times that the UI of GP utilities will freeze, but if I leave it alone and let it finish processing it will come back. This seems to happen when you try to interact with then windows when it is running (moving the windows, resizing windows, etc).
I usually run a SQL profile or look at the active processes on the SQL server to check to see if there is any activity on the sql server level. If there is then just let it run for a while and it should come back to life.
