How to make Shortcut Dimension 5 non-editable on Sales Order in Business Central

Hi

I need a way to make Shortcut Dimension 5 Code read-only/non-editable in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, specifically on the Sales Order page.

The Shortcut Dimension 5 is displayed as Tender No. and exists both in the Sales Order Header (Sales Header) and Sales Order Lines (Sales Line).

I want the value to be populated automatically by my AL code, but I don't want users to manually change or edit the Tender No. / Shortcut Dimension 5 Code either in the Sales Order Header or in the Sales Order Lines.

What is the correct AL approach to make Shortcut Dimension 5 non-editable/read-only on both the Header and Lines?

Do you mean that after clicking the Dimensions button, the pop-up page should be set to non-editable for users? For example, Tender No.

If that is the case, there is no straightforward way to achieve this directly. Because it is linked via the Dimension Set ID, making it non-editable here would prevent modifications across all detailed entries associated with that ID.

A potential workaround I came up with is to disable the standard action button and directly expose the required Dimension fields on the page. Although it requires additional maintenance effort, it serves as a viable solution.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

    Hello Rami,

The correct AL approach is to create page extensions for both Sales Order and Sales Order Subform and modify the existing Shortcut Dimension 5/Tender No. controls with Editable = false, for example modify(<ShortcutDim5Control>) { Editable = false; }; Microsoft confirms that Editable = false prevents changes through the UI but does not prevent your AL code from assigning the value, so your automatic population will continue to work. Note that Shortcut Dimensions 3–8 are ultimately maintained through the document’s Dimension Set ID, so making the visible field read-only does not prevent a user from opening Dimensions and changing Tender No. there; if the real requirement is that users must never manually change Dimension 5, you should additionally enforce that rule in your dimension validation/update logic rather than relying only on the page property. Use downloaded symbols/Page Inspector to confirm the exact control names for your BC version before using modify().

As stated this is not possible as standard, you could remove the dimension column from the sub-form so the user cannot see it.  However if you don't also remove the dimension option from the lines menu, they can still access/edit.

Hi, the lines are the easy part. Sales Order Subform has the shortcut dimensions as controls already, so in a page extension you modify the one for dimension 5 and put Editable = false. I think it's called ShortcutDimCode5, check in your version. The header has only dimension 1 and 2 in standard, so Tender No. there is your own control, same thing, Editable = false. Your code can still fill it, this blocks only the user.

But honestly, this won't stop anybody who wants to change it. They open Dimensions on the header or the line and edit it there. We had exactly this on a client, the field was locked on the page and the values were still wrong at month end.

Glad to help - follow up if anything is unclear.
