Build/fresh new DEV organization based on Production database backup (with managed solution) ??

Hi there,

We are in a upgrade project from 2013 (on premise) to 365V9 (on premise).

I have created a new 365V9 DEV organization/system based on database backup of our CRM2013 live system (upgrade from 2013>2015>365V8 > 3658v, what a journey, but it worked!)

1. All the releases (around 25) on our CRM 2013 live were done using managed solutions.  All the solutions on our new 365V9 dev organization will be managed solutions now since this organization is based on the CRM live 2013 backup.  Will this be a problem going forward?  Will we still be able to do all the dev work on this organization –considering this organization inherited all the managed solution from live

2. Going forward we would like to do all new releases using unmanaged solutions. To be honest we never had to roll-up back any solutions so I don't see any extra benefit for managed solutions - it only gave us headaches in the past. Will this be a problem ? Can we release new functionality to Dynamics365 live using unmanaged solution (considering we already have imported approx. 25 managed solutions in CRM2013 days.)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

Regards
Alen

RE: Build/fresh new DEV organization based on Production database backup (with managed solution) ??

    Hi David

Many thanks for your quick reply. Regarding point 1 - is my assumption correct that you are talking about the C# code (plugins) and .js (web ressources) source code ? We have both of them in our source control (TFS).

Regarding point 2 - I need to check.

    Thanks

    Alen

    There are 2 key considerations:

    1. Do you have the original unmanaged source for all of the managed solutions ?

    2. Do any of the managed solutions contain and components with managed properties that do not allow changes ?

If any of the solutions have restrictive managed properties, then you'll need the unmanaged source for these solutions. You can then change the managed properties to be unrestrictive, then redeploy the solution (still as a managed solution), which will then allow you to change the components in the destination organisation (the one that has the managed solutions)

Once all components are modifiable, then you can start creating your own unmanaged solutions to deploy changes.

If you don't have the original unmanaged source, and there are restrictive managed properties, then you have a problem as you have no way to change these managed properties. Unfortunately there's no good resolution to this; you'll either to accept that the managed properties can't be changed, or uninstall the managed solutions (which will probably involve data loss)
