Restore Backup of CRM environment

Hi,

I have a CRM 2013 production environment installed on a server. I created a new organisation of CRM on 31st March on the same server by taking the backup of prod database. The new organisation got created and worked fine. I wanted to refresh this organisation with the latest data of production on a monthly basis. Hence I restored the prod database of 30th Apr onto the new organisation database. The database got restored but while logging onto new organisation of CRM I received the error of system id not present. How could this happen since the prod database is the same??How can I refresh the new CRM on a monthly basis with the prod CRM??

Thanks in advance

It's a little more complex than that. Simply restoring the database from one org to another will not do it for you. You would have to do an org restore (override the existing org) every time when you need to refresh the data. Alternatively, you can set-up integration between the two orgs, to keep data in sync. For that you can use SSIS, Scribe, or a bunch of other tools, or go custom if you have too much time on your hands or you are looking at something very specific.

This is a tough problem if you only have one server to work with.  Ideally you should have a separate box for this, with it's own install of CRM and SQL.  You restore the DB to the 2nd box, then run the deployment manager to import the recently restored database.  CRM need to map out the users and POA table to ensure integrity, so you can't just restore the database.

Thanks Nicolae for the reply.SSIS is one option which i will try to look at. I have not used it before but may be I can ask someone for help.

What did you mean by organisation restore??you mean deleting the new org and creating another new org again taking the last database backup of prod env??

Thanks Chris for the reply.say for example I arrange another server with crm and sql installed in it.I create an empty database, restore db from prod and then import a new org.So now my new org is created.but what happens after a month??The prod db will now have more records now.How do I now sync the prod env of CRM (with more records) with this new org in the new server??Please advise

Here are a couple of Blogs about restoring from Production to Dev or UAT.

    survivingcrm.com/.../creating-a-copy-of-your-production-crm-database

    support.microsoft.com/.../952934

They refer to 4.0 and 2011, but the concepts are essentially the same for 2013.

Correct, just like the other guys suggested, you would do a new org deployment using the backup of the production database. Again, this is something you would do as a one-off, but if you need this on regular basis I would consider spending the time to create a proper integration using SSIS (if you are or have a SSIS resource) or using Scribe (much shorter learning curve).

Thank you Chris for the answer. I read the blog and it was very informative. The solution is to use SSIS or scribe and nothing else. Thanks for your help

It would appear that it is absolutely impossible for Microsoft to maintain their links for more than 10 minutes!
