Move a D365FO Production database to a UDE environment

Hi All,

Although I did some googling, I cannot seem to find a clear answer on this one.

I have Prod, Pre-Prod and UAT in LCS.
I have my DEV box in UDE without LCS.

I want to move the D365FO database from Production to my DEV box. As DEV is not in LCS, I cannot use LCS to do so.

In PowerPlatform I have two options: Copy or Restore. But from what I understand both only move the Data Verse database to the target environment and not the D365FO database.

What should I do here ? Assume I have a data related issue in my production environment and I want that Production D365FO database in my Dev box for debugging. What steps should I take ?

Thanks,
Gerard Verbruggen

    Hi Gerard,

When you copy an environment in PPAC, it will copy the complete environment, including all metadata and databases, also the F&O database. There is a feature implemented called Transactionless copy. This is enabled for a copy action by default, but can be disabled is you need all transactions in a sandbox or UDE.

    Hi,

This is a good question and I would like to know myself how to do this. I can't find an answer anywhere as well on how to get the D465FO production environment data in the UDE environment for debugging.

This raises more questions to discuss on this topic. Is it possible to debug the D365FO UAT environment using an UDE? This would make more sense to me because the data is already present in the UAT environemnt and you don't have to potentially move massive amounts of data (i.e. increased cost and risk) into the UDE environment.

Some databases can be huge. Besides, is it wise to move client data into the UDE environment? Think of personal data of persons that are privacy sensitive like names, bank accounts etc. There are potential risks here if the UDE environment is not properly configured/secured.

    Thanks André,

Clear. Then there is one addition in PowerPlatform that would be very useful: Only copy the D365FO database (with or without transactions) ;o)

    Cheers,
    Gerard

@Anton: No, you cannot debug a TEST environment.

With cloud hosted VMs it's possible to debug a copy of the production database in the UAT environment, see official documentation link below. So it will be great if this is added to UDEs as well is really more my point.

Debug a copy of the production database

    Hi Gerard,

If you copy only the F&O database, there might be inconsistencies if you use both Dataverse and the F&O database. Also the F&O database depends on the underlying application version and customizations. I think for that reason, a database only is not supported.

Anyway, I do agree it would be very useful to be able to do a data refresh only.
