XML mapping not working in 23.4 Word-layouts

Dear community,
 
I am officially stuck.
Working with XML-maps in Word-layouts has always been pretty straightforward... until now.
 
i get following behaviour in a 23.4 BE and a 23.4 W1 (checked them both), on two different machines (so 4 different tests prior to posting this)
 
Look at the CompanySwift_Llbl  field below: it was not on the Word-layout, so I added it from the XML map. 
Issue is: the referencing to the XML-map is gone: look at how the other (already existing) fields are shown.
The missing info can be added manually, but that is not an option when 10+ fields need to be added ... moreover in a repeater-situation.
 
 
I tried exporting the XML map and adding it to a blank WOrd-file: same story.
 
What's my next option?
