ReportReport

hi folks

I have a SOP blank modified quote report for type ID regular quote City X

I now want to make a SOP long modified quote report for type ID regular quote City Y

City X and City Y have nice logo's that have their addresses in them so I need to use two different type id's and two different reports.

I have taken the SOP blank word template and added in the logo and made the required changes.

I now want to do the same for the SOP long word template.  I have saved the SOP blank word template with a new name and changed the logo.

Trying to import this new word template I get the error

The template you selected cannot be added to this report.

I am guessing that something in the word template knows that this word template should be tied to (can only be tied to?) the SOP blank report.

Can I change that something to tie the word template to the GP long report?

thanks!

    Hi,

Please close the template after saving it then import the same.

    Hi Babu

Sadly it is not as simple as the file is open.  I did know that the file must be closed.

I suspect it is because the word template is the blank template and I now want to import it against the long quote form.

Is there something in the word templates that tell the document which GP form they belong to?  If so can that thing be changed?

    thanks!

    Hi

sorry for the delay in reply, have you used modified report to use it on template.  please have a look at the following link for modified report on template and how to use word template generator.

    Hi Babu

Yes I am using the word template generator (although I had to resort to the 2013R2 generator as I cant find one for 2015 as yet).

    It is extremely tedious however.

I am starting with the SOP blank template that comes with GP.  I need to use the exact same format but have a different logo.  So i use the template generator to make a SOP long template.  I can copy the blank template to the long template thus getting the formatting but I have to delete each field off the template and add them back field by tedious field.

Again there must be something in the XML of the word file that ties the word template to a particular SOP document.  Is this something editable such that you can change it from SOP blank to SOP long and the file will just work, rather than this removing each field business.

    Hi,

After adding new xml have your gone to the customer XML mapping and press remove source and add the new source again.

    Hi

The issue here is that the Word Templates are based on Report Writer.  So saving the Blank over the top of Long is perfectly valid (and I do it all the time).

The step you are missing is to load the xml from Report Writer back into the template.

If you open the Word Template for Long and go to the Developer tab and click on the Field list - if you drop down the xml resource field I am pretty sure you will see that it says SOP Blank - that is the setting the import is looking at.

To get the correct xml in the Word template:

    - In Dynamics GP, print an open invoice to long form using the standard option.

    - When you get to the print destination screen, print to file as a type .xml

    - Open your long form in Word

    - Click on the Developer tab and choose remove source

    - You will get an error message saying some fields may not work (and they may not)

    - Click on Add Source and find your xml file

    - Save and Close and readd to Dynamics GP

If you get any errors on printing (i.e. missing fields or xxxx), you may need to redrag a field onto the template.

Same steps apply going from open to history, invoice to return.  I always create the open invoice first.  Once that is signed off, I use that form to save over the top of Return, Historical Invoice, Historical Return and tweak rather than start from scratch for each one.

How did you copy the Blank template to the Long Template?  I am trying the same thing with the Short Form.  I don't want to have to format the template with the heading borders, shading, etc.

    HI J

I used the template generator to make the long template

opened the long template in word

opened the blank template in word

control A to select all in the long template and delete.

control A to select all in the blank template and copy

    paste into the long template

    everything copies, bookmarks, shading, logos.

doing it this way however leaves the template with the xml file for the long format, and all the fields are from the blank format, so I had to remove them all one by one and replace them.

Heather's suggestion would / should work if you have the xml file that has the correct fields.
