Supplier Information on a released product

As I am a novice in AX and coming from Nav one thing I noticed about products is that I cannot find a default field for the manufacturer part number of a product.

What are some of your recommendations for tracking the product manufacturer, part number, supplier item number, and other subsequent information we may receive from a supplier of a product?

Also in AX is there a way to merge items?

For instance if I have a scenario where we have been purchasing a product from a manufacturer for a few years and we have a designated item number which is referenced. An acquisition or a merger occurs and that manufacturer changes slight details of the product such as the manufacturer part number but the product is still the same product. Then someone creates the new product not realizing this is in fact a duplicate product. We now need to merge the transactions of the two products into one to obtain a complete history of the product. What can you recommend for this scenario?

    Hi Kwoznica,

    > the product manufacturer

On the 'Purchase' fast tab of the Released product, you can define the primary 'Vendor' for the item. This has some affect to functionality in the Master Planning area.

    > part number

I assume this is what AX refers to as Item number and Product number.

    > supplier item number

On the Released product -> 'Purchase' tab in the ribbon bar -> External Item Description. This is where Vendor Item numbers are commonly stored. These can be configured to print on Purchase order documentation, instead of (or as well as) your item number.

    > and other subsequent information we may receive from a supplier of a product?

Such as? Document handling can be used to attach most types of document, or notes, to an item.

    > merge items

Not that I know of. There is 'Alternative item' functionality, but it only applies on Sales orders (and Quotes) - not Purchase orders. It can ensure that if you attempt to sell the 'wrong' item that the correct one is used. But it doesn't do anything in the area of assigning one item's transactions to another.

If you need to merge items just for the purposes of reporting, you need to adjust what ever reporting mechanism you're using. If you need to merge items for the purposes of planning (so that demand for two items can be assigned to the correct one item) you'll need to do this in the sales forecast. The R3 Demand Forecasting solution doesn't do this out of the box. 3rd party AX forecasting solutions can, and call the functionality 'Supersession'.

    Hi Kwoznica,

In addition to the answer from Guy:

To merge released products into one is possible, but not from a front end.

It is possible to use a 'merge' command in a script wtitten in x++ to merge records (and related transactions). The merge command takes care of the related records. This requires good understanding of AX development and also extensive testing once a script is written and used.

RE: Supplier Information on a released product

    Hello kwoznica,

For our business practice (IT reselling products), we're using the "Search name" filed in the released product form for the manufacturer part number. Since the part number is unique, even when purchased from different distributors, this is the best field we could used.

On the Purchase tab, the External item description will allow you to create one or more external item number, and they have to be related to vendor accounts.

Another option is the External codes in the General tab. From this window, you can create a code (the code will be available to each products), and you then can add a value for each released products. This last option can be useful, is quite flexible, but require a few clicks before getting to it.

    I hope that help.

    Thanks,

    David
