Connecting Cloned "staging" ORG's (TEST, DEV and PROD) to the same Exchange Server

Greetings.   I recently inherited a CRM 2015 deployment that was deployed by a 3rd party.   They cloned two ORG's on the same server (Not supported, but that is a different issue..).   We are using server side sync with Exchange and the profile is identical on the cloned ORG's (Let's call that DEV and PROD for now).   I have worked to clean up the systems so that they are supportable and I have created separate Exchange profiles and TEST exchange mailboxes.  My question is what is the best practice for using a Single instance of Exchange to support cloned ORG's (Or just multiple ORG's).

If by cloning you mean- backup/restore database to different name and then import using the deployment manager then I don't think that is unsupported. I would be happy to make as many non-prod instances as you need by this technique. However, I would separate prod and pre-prod into a separate high availability deployment. As far as I can see there is no inherent problem using the same instance of Exchange, except the possibility of annoying outgoing emails created in DEV and TEST, so therefore I generally do not APPROVE senders in these instances so all outgoing emails stay in PendingSend.

Hey Chris.   Thanks for the response.   I just went through this with CRM PSS, the will not support the "Re import" or "Clone" of a CRM ORG into the same instance of CRM Server.  It is "not supported" though it works.   I get why they are using that caveat as there are some scenarios where there may be issues, so they are playing it safe.  Here is the TechNet article on the topic that states it is "not supported" - technet.microsoft.com/.../dn905200.aspx;MSPPError=-2147217396 See bullet 2.

As for the Exchange profile I hear ya.   All of the "PendingSend" emails will be queued up on the "TEST" (cloned) instance of the ORG using the same profile and users.  The challenge here is that we want our UAT business users to actually kick off the processes that send email (Like Close WIN/LOSS) or we have automated Risk assessments and "cases" created for at risk opportunities and then we have a leadership team queue that get's these cases.    So we have role based testing accounts, but the business would prefer to use their regular accounts.   I will poke around a bit more.   And don't let the "Not Supported" cloning sneak up on you like it did with me.  Up until now I have never done the import/clone on the same server so it never occurred to me that it may be an issue.  And it is from MSFT's perspective...

Tip: For role-based testing accounts, if you use KeyPass you can easily set these up in here with a runas link to open IE using those credentials and therefore have multiple roles open on your desktop.
