Portals/Power Pages (CS Self-Service Portal)

Hello Community,

I have a few questions that I've had a difficult time getting straight, documented answers to so I figured I'd ask the experts.

As we know, D365 Customer Engagement apps have had some portal entitlement for a long while now, but I'm curious how that might be changing with Power Pages being the new kid on the block.

The Power Platform LG gives a little insight on Power Pages included with Power Apps and D365 licenses.  It mentions that, with D365 Enterprise apps, you can have unlimited Power Pages websites, for example.  Does that "unlimited" mean unlimited creation or does it give you unlimited user access as well?  I know for internal users this is less of a concern but I'm thinking about CS Enterprise users who are used to having use rights to a customer self-service portal.  Will they need additional capacity fas long as it is a single portal that only maps back to the CRM instance?

What, in your opinion, has changed between "portals" and "pages" for CE users that might actually need to be communicated?  What has actual potential end-user impact and what are just changes in wording or terminology?

At one point, I thought there was a minimum user count to get the "free" portal?

Does a document exist that clearly lays all of this out?  All I can find is a little here and a little there which makes it hard to clearly explain to end users.  Surprisingly, documentation feels pretty light on this topic.

Thanks for our thoughts/insights/answers in advance!

it's not just changes in wording and terminology. I thought it was, and especially when PowerPortal documentation disappeared for a bit, but upon finding I simply couldn't do things in my Power Portal that were part of PowerPages, I asked Microsoft.  It is actually an upgrade of the technology, different management tool, and to move from one to the other, you actually have to go through a migration process.  They have a tool that helps iwth the migration but I was advised if you have any complex code, it may not work.

We had to put a project in for this year to transition from PowerPortal to PowerPages.

Microsoft's transition from Dynamics 365 (D365) Customer Engagement portals to Power Pages introduces several changes in licensing, capabilities, and user access. Here's a detailed overview:

    Licensing and Entitlements:

    • Unlimited Website Creation: With D365 Enterprise applications, you can create unlimited Power Pages websites within the same environment as your licensed apps. However, this entitlement pertains only to the number of websites you can create; it does not extend to user access rights.

    • User Access:

      • Internal Users: Users with appropriate D365 licenses can access Power Pages without additional costs, provided the website is within the same environment as their licensed application.
      • External Users: Access for external users (e.g., customers or partners) requires additional licensing based on user type:
        • Authenticated Users: Licenses are sold in capacity packs, typically starting at 100 users per website per month.
        • Anonymous Users: Licenses are available in capacity packs, often starting at 500 users per website per month.

    Transition from Portals to Pages:

    • Enhanced User Experience: Power Pages offers a more intuitive, low-code/no-code design studio, enabling users without extensive technical expertise to create and manage websites efficiently.

    • Design and Customization: While Power Apps Portals required knowledge of web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for customization, Power Pages provides pre-built templates and a user-friendly interface, reducing the need for deep technical skills.

    • Provisioning and Management: Power Pages streamlines the website provisioning process, allowing for quicker deployment compared to the traditional portals.

We tried a customer service portal using power pages and it turned out well

    Hi blakecheek,

    1."unlimited":

Dynamics 365 enterprise licensed users – Users who have been assigned Dynamics 365 enterprise licenses can use unlimited Power Pages websites. These websites must map to the licensed Dynamics 365 application context and map to the same environment as the licensed Dynamics 365 application.

    2.Difference:

A base license is not required for Power Pages. Where Power Apps Portals required either a Dynamics 365 or Power Apps plan to be purchased as a base license, Power Pages licenses are available on a standalone basis.
