Exchange Server - E-Mail not send

We are trying to use Exchange Server for email communication instead of an Outlook client.

We set up an E-Mail-Serverprofile for this, and also a mailbox. When clicking the 'Test and activate' button the system reports success, and an actual email is send and received by the mailbox.

When we try to send an email from that mailbox user to a contact however, no email ist send, it stays pending.

I was not able to gather further information as to what might be the problem.

Has anybody had any success in using the Exchange Server directly for email functionality.
