On-Premise version - the same application source code as in cloud' version ?

Dear All,

deciding soon about version for upgrade - we are considering Dynamics 365 On-Premise (available summer 2017) vs AX 2012 R3. One of most important doubts is:

1. AX2012 R3 has been released on market long time ago, new CU's have been released -> so - a lot of potential bugs/errors are solved ;

2. Dynamics 365 for Operation On-Premise will be released at nearest summer -> so - it is new version - potentially having much more bugs and being not so stable :(

We see advantages of upgrade to newest versions, but we need to be more convinced about stability of it. Could somebody tell us if expected version Dynamics 365 for Operation On Premise is based on the same source code for application as versions for cloud (released in past)? If so - we could expect more stability and much less bugs...

Any opinion/advice kindly appreciated :)

    Yes, it will be the same Dynamics 365 for Operations, just deployed in a different way.

    It should be the same code base as the current release of DMO365 at the time of install on- premise -it has to first be spun up in the  cloud -  but thereafter it may not be in sync because you are in charge of code update on premise. Obviously your own customisations, if any, at install,  will  need to be added and  be compatible with that DMO365 code .

    The former 'Ax7' solution is where DMO365 started but there have been several platform update releases since then - and you will get the latest release but that should not be a concern with regard to stability - DMO365 brought with it  many improvements both to code upgradeability and to deployment and QA

    It will not be the  same code as Ax 2012 R3 the code base is progressively moving to extensions whereas most Ax 2012 is overlayered code and of course the UI for forms is also different.

    So if you start with Ax 2012 R3 (which is not necessarily a bad choice e.g. you may need a vertical module not yet available at DMO365, or may not be able to get hold of DMO365 certified consultants) then you will have to factor in that an upgrade will be needed in future. (Ax 2012 should be supported for  another 3 years).
