Data storage of CRM online on Azure

Posted on by 384

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what the CRM online version of data storage looks like?

On-premise version, we usually install a sql server, locally and then install CRM.

What about the online version? is it the same as the on-premise version? Firstly, on Azure, Microsoft has a special virtual machine, created a database, and then built the crm, like this?

Although it has nothing to do with me, I still want to know.

Thank you for your provided doc, Although the content is not clearly stated, but I think  it should be the same as on-premise, it's just the difference between sql server on Azure and local sql server.

I mistakenly mis-clicked and reported this post as abusive. This was a fat-finger error so my apologies. @Microsoft please remove that error.

To answer the question, D365 Online Storage is not accessible directly like you can access a SQL Server on prem. D365 Online is completely different than On-Prem.

The data is accessible via API from outside of D365 Online. However you can create a Database Replica in Azure which will sync the data real time so you can access it with traditional SQL Queries.

You basically set up the D365 Org via the administrative pane, and it's as simple as that. There is no SQL Server Installation involved, no virtual machine or anything else.

The storage plan separates storage into 3 types, file, database, and log. Any attachments will get classified as file storage, the databse storage is the data itself, and log storage is obviously for logs. The azure database replica is completely separate and is billed through azure.

The biggest difference is internal d365 reporting which requires fetch xml instead of sql queries, you can read about the differences with the reporting here https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/things-supported-dynamics-crm-365-cloreports-only-on-premise-aloye/

    Hi,

Same process is being followed on Online version of CRM. Online version sql database has been hosted on multiple virtual machines for Disaster recovery. Also based on Region selected while setting up CRM, SQL installed on data centers which is near to the regios selected.

If found helpful, Please mark my answer verified.

    Hi Stone,

Dynamics 365 applications, such as Dynamics 365 Sales, Dynamics 365 Customer Service or Dynamics 365 Talent, use the Common Data Service to store and secure data used by the applications. This enables you to build apps using Power Apps and the Common Data Service directly against your core business data already used within Dynamics 365 without the need for integration.

Common Data Service lets you securely store and manage data that's used by business applications. Data within Common Data Service is stored within a set of entities. An entity is a set of records used to store data, similar to how a table stores data within a database. Common Data Service includes a base set of standard entities that cover typical scenarios, but you can also create custom entities specific to your organization and populate them with data using Power Query. App makers can then use Power Apps to build rich applications using this data.
