GP going back to default when Computer restarts?

Posted on by 3,225

Has anyone ever had this happen to them and if so do you know how to fix it?

We have a couple people here that whenever their computers are shut down or updates are automatically installed their GP settings go back to default.  For example the modified forms.  This just recently started happening.

Thank you,

Katie

Katie, when you loose connection to a modified form or report dictionary in GP the system will automatically default back to the 'core' forms and reports.  The Core reports are all in the Dynamics.dic file located on the local drive in which the GP application was installed.  As a rule, GP users security setting on the folder here should include at least WRITE / CREATE / DELETE.

When the system looses connetion to a shared drive, or the shared dirve has not been reset 'quickly' after a restart often times the system (GP) just assumes it is gone and goes back to home.

I would also check the folder level security settings for the users loosing connection to the shared folder location and make sure that they also have at least CREATE / DELETE permissions.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Andrew,

Sorry I havent replied, I had other issues come up and I am now just getting back to this.

Yes they are fat client installs.  Yes the security and access to modified forms is what I am talking about.  For instance my computer only just resets back to the original form, but another persons computer gets the error "dictionary not loaded"  I do believe we each have are own dynamics.set file installed on our computer but we also have it on our shared drive.  I can have our gp partner verify.  I have spoken with our GP partner before and they believe it is an IT issue, but our IT guy does not fully understand GP so I am not sure if he would know how to fix this.

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Katie

Are these fat client installs on local machines , or is GP deployed over citrix or Terminal servers?

When you say the forms go back to defaults , do you mean the security i.e. access to modified forms or the location i.e. local forms and reports dictionaries as opposed to shared network dictionaries?

chances are if its the location issue the users don't have full control of the dynamics folder on the local install (NTFS file permissions) and so changes to the dynamics.set and dex.ini files are not made so its going back to the defaults each time the machine is shut down.

Although I have seen similar things were a users IT department have set up Nightly batch files to copy down changes and ensure all machines are the same and some PC management software such as Altiris will do something similar.
