UCI - Import button missing

Hi, we've been trying to finally move over to the UCI from the old interface.

For some reason the sitemap in the UCI we have is missing a lot of entities & options and we're now gradually putting things back in order and taking the chance to re-evaluate how we've organised things up to now.

One thing that has stumped us is that we can't see the Import button (to check the import logs). We can't find it as an option in the sitemap editor either.

Can anyone help? What do we need to do to add it to the sitemap. Or as hinted at in a couple of things I've seen, should it be available in the top bar with search, task flow, advanced find, etc? It's not there for us either!

Any help would be extremely gratefully received!

Thanks in advance,
Stephen

    Hi Stephen,

Do you mean import Jobs? What are the import logs you mentioned? I never came across them being in that top bar. Are they a result of a custom solution you are using?

Regarding your sitemaps, one major change when moving to UCI is that you have to organize your site map(s). This means, if you you use your application for one vertical (like one use case or one department), create a model driven app that contains all the entities you need and customize the sitemap for that app to include what you need. More info on that here

    docs.microsoft.com/.../build-first-model-driven-app

If you use your application for multiple verticals/uses cases, then create more than one model driven app depending on each use case. Model driven apps are just containers for entities and components along with their sitemaps.

In additiona to above, the settings area is also moved. refer below-

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for both your answers.

We're already working on model driven apps, so good to know we're on the right track, Omar. And that settings tip is very useful, Ravi!

The import button is still a big issue though - yes, I mean import jobs where you can see info about how successful an import was / the status of the import you're doing.

I've not idea where it should be, another post suggested it should be in the buttons top right (which it isn't for us). We don't see anything there at all. If it should be in the sitemap, how can we add it manually?

    Thanks!

    Hi Stephen,

Please note that the 'import' button in the post you provided is incorrectly displayed, meaning that this button should not appear, it only appears in certain specific environments.

This ‘import’ button has no actual function, and when I click on it, an error message is displayed.

If you want to import data or view the progress of the import, you should go to Settings > Data Management > Imports, click the IMPORT DATA button to upload the file, or click on the record in the view to check the progress of the import.

Thanks, Hao - so the only solution to see the import jobs (and their success) is via the old settings? That seems a bit retro active from MS, especially as it's a function that is used a lot.

Do you, by any chance, know what the future plans are for settings, since, as far as I know, the old interface will be retired in October next year?

    Hi Stephen,

    1. In addition, you can import data and view the progress of the import in PowerApps.

Sign in to PowerApps and select the Common Data Service environment where you want to enable the Solution checker.

Please refer to this blog for the steps to import data: https://carldesouza.com/import-excel-data-model-driven-powerapp-data-integration-project/

    2. Yes, the web client (Classic UI) will be deprecated in the future.

But Settings is a special area, it is not open to low-privileged users, only to high-privileged users such as system administrators.

Microsoft is gradually moving the functionality of the Settings area to Power Platform and PowerApps, so it is still unclear whether the Settings area will be replaced in the future.

Thanks for your help. Not really the answer I'd like (since imports are used by a lot of our non-admin users, too), but at least we have an answer!

We'll have to cope with using the settings like this for the time being, but hope that something more user-friendly comes down the pipe from MS.

    Hi,

You can go to the entity you want to import and click Import from Excel in the ribbon button.

Hi there! I found a workaround that might work if you're still looking for one. Full details here: www.crmheidi.com/.../

You can add the Data Import area to your Sitemap in a model-driven app. It just opens in a new tab in classic. But it gives your end users somewhere on their app where they can monitor import status.
