PDF Writer

ReportReport

Hello,

My client is on GP10.00 with service pack 3. The issue they are having is that when they do a receivables or payable enquiry, and then choose to print the report to a PDF Printer (Writer), the PDF printout prints little squares all over instead of the actual data.

They are are PDF Writer version 8.1.2.

Any idea what would cause this and what solution I could use to sort this out?

Regards,

Jay

You may consider to try the PDFCreator. We have been using it for sometime, without any issue.

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

BTW, you may need to check if the Regional settings & Language of the installed Windows. Does this happen to only certain computer?

Or you can try PrimoPDF. Have been using it for a long time without issue.

    Hello William,

Thanks for the reply. And sorry for only getting back to you now. There seemed to have been an issue with connecting to the forum for some reason.

I will check the regional settings. There are 9 workstations and this seems to happen on only 8 of them. The one that does work has version 8.1.2 of PDF Writer and the others have version 8.1.0. I did get another workstation upgraded to PDF Writer version 8.1.2 but this problem still persists.

    Regards,

    Jay

    Hi, Jay,

Sorry, I have not using Adobe PDF Writer 8.x.x for our clients, but most of them are either send printout to PDFCreator (not from Adobe) or XPS Document Writer (by Microsoft).

May be you could provide us the sample of your printout (little squares). you may not able to attach the sample file here in this forum, but you may provide a link to the image file ( for example, see this)

Does those little squares characters are showing in the preview (on the screen) before printout? the little squares sound like non-English PDF fonts or encoding -- may be those computers need additional font pack, eg. Asian fonts.

Alternatively, you can try to download the PDFCreator or XPS Document Writer, to see if the squares still appear in the print output to files.

    Hello William,

I have downloaded the PDF Creator and I have asked the IT person at my client to install it on one machine to see if this works. I will keep you updated accordingly.

Regarding the little squares, yes it prints like that on the screen as well as if printing to the printer.

    Regards,

    Jay

    Hi Jay,

This problem is related to a font identification issue with Adobe Acrobat Writer. I've had this in the past where my electricity utility company changed their Acrobat version and all of a sudden, the reader I used to display the PDF invoices I got from their customer web-site was not able to show properly all the text... some portion where displayed as small squares... the problem is quite old now (I think about 2 years ago), but was fixed after I told them about the problem.

You're probably much better as Ian and William suggested (and as I do too)  to use an open source PDF generator application. I use PDF Creator since many years and never had any issues.

    Regards

    Hello Beat,

Thanks for the reply. I will check how far the IT person at the client got with the PDF Creator.

Am I correct in assuming that there is no real fix for the font identification with Acrobat Writer?

    Regards,

    Jay

     Hi Jay,

Hope you'll have a lucky day :-) and will be able to convince the client to move on to PDF Creator. This tool has much more  options that Acrobat writer has... multilingual, auto-save, document stamps, etc...

As for Acrobat Writer, your only chance would be to downgrade or upgrade, depending on which version is currently supported by Dynamics GP (I've heard that not all version are recognized properly, thus making it unavailable for direct PDF export). PDF Creator will create a regular print queue, that way you can assign the printer with 'named printer' option in GP to any report as default printer. Combined with the auto-save option, this would be a nice way to generate reports without too much user intervention.

Hello Beat and the rest of the team,

Thanks for the input and the suggestions. The client has gone the route of PDF Creator and this seems to be working fine.

Again, thanks alot. Really appreciate it.

    Regards,

    Jay
