Better to enter Gen. Bus. Posting Group when posting Inventory?

Hi,

I have a question a business process, how to proceed to post inventory adjustment, like the beginning balance.
My client HQ wants users to enter Gen. Bus. Posting Group value when posting Item Journals.
HQ wants to eliminate the combination Gen. Bus. Posting Group = '' and Gen. Prod. Posting Group = 'SomeCode' or '' in General Posting Setup.

However, the default value in Gen. Bus. Posting Group are not set in Item Journal or Phys. Inventory Journal. Users have to set the value manually.
The users don't want to put the value manually because many items are listed.

In Business Central standard way, which is better, creating the combination blank Gen Bus Posting Group or not in General Posting Setup?

Thank you.

    Hello,

You have to setup the GBPG and GPPG combinations, with a Blank GBPG because Item Journals, Physical Inventory Journals, Revaluation Journals, all work with Items and NOT the Customer or Vendor (the GBPG value) when posting. So you need the Blank GBPG and GPPG combination so that BC knows what GL Accounts to post Inventory Adjustments too. You do not want to leave this to human entry and the GPPG setup for each Item will eliminate errors.

A typical Item Journal entry would be this:

Negative Adjustment - Item A - GPPG (Finished Good) :  DEBIT Inventory Adjmt. Account  xxxxx

Item A - Inventory Posting Group (Finished Good): CREDIT Inventory Account (xxxxx)

The above is an example and the GPPG and IPG, on the Item Card, define the GL Accounts posted too.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Thank you Steven!

As the standard way in Business Central, GBPG <blank> and GPPG <xxxx> combination is normal for Item and Phys. Inventory Journals.

Since my client company wants not to use this GBPG <blank> and GPPG <xxxx> combination for Item and Phys Inventory Journal, GBPG and GPPG fields are necessary to be displayed in Item Journal.

If they want to enter GBPG automatically in Item Journal, customization is necessary.

    Hello,

Here is the issue... On the Item Journal or Phys. Inventory Journal, the User has to enter the GPPG value, at a minimum, or the Journal will not Post and worse, if you do not setup the General Posting Group combination, then BC will not know the GL Accounts to post too. You have to have this setup or build a customization based on what you are trying to achieve. I will say this would not be a good customization since I cannot see a valid or logically reason to not setup the General Posting Setup combinations that allow the Journal to post seamlessly.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hello,

My client HQ is worried about GBPG blank and GPPG blank combination to post Item/Phys Inventory Journals.
I checked I could set GBPG blank and GPPG blank combination in General Posting Setup by importing in Configuration Package.
I also confirmed at least GPPG value was required for posting on those journals in BC v18 even when "blank blank" combination was set.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

One thing to note is that on the Item Card, Work Center/Machine Center Card, Item Charges, and Resource Card you need to setup a General Product Posting Group. Having the GPPG mandatory on these master records means that they will always populate and if the posting includes Customer and Vendor you will have the GBPG and GPPG combination. Without Customer and Vendor, you have a blank GBPG and populated GPPG.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve
