Upgrade RMS 2.0 from SQL Server 2005 Express to 2008 R2 Standard

Posted on by 40

We currently have 10 lanes using Microsoft RMS v2.0 (SQL Express 2005).
The Server is Single processor Xenon (Quad core) with Microsoft 2003 Server running the SQL Server 2005 Express. This is the DB of record.
We have hit the 4 Gb limit and want to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 Standard R2 (since 2005 Standard is no longer supported).
I realize that 2008 R2 express raises the limit to 10 Gb but we want to avoid issues in the future.
No other applications will use the SQL Server.

So what licensing is needed - Is all we need the 2008 R2 Standard and that is it?
I've been told by the reseller we do not need CALs for each lane since the RMS licensing takes care of that (no direct calls into the server except for through RMS). However, I would like to confirm.

Are there any issues we should be aware of in doing this?
Is upgrading to the 2008 version simply backing up the database and restoring ater installing the 2008? Does the DB instance name need to be the same?

Are there any issues at the workstations - should those be upgraded to 2008 Express?

Thank you in advance.

    Brad,

RMS communicates directly to SQL Server, so each workstation (POS or Manager) must have a CAL.  The Express database connection at the POS only communicates to the SQL Server when doing a Offline sync, but that is covered under the workstation CAL.  BTW, we recommend that one purchase a  Device CAL versus a User CAL. The only time one accesses the Express version on the Register is when the Register loses connection to the main SQL Server and goes into Offline mode.

I don't know your situation to recommend a purchase option.  All SQL Standards are the same, the Open License are ways of purchasing the product along with different license options for your site(s).  If you are running SBS there is SQL Standard for Small Business Server version available to you as well.

The question is do you need the features of Standard ($$$) or will the Workgroup Edition ($$) work for you instead. http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/editions-compare.aspx

EDIT: Forgot to mention 32 bit and 64 bit versions.  You didn't mention if your Server 2003  is 32 or 64 bit.  If you can, do 64.

Re: Upgrade RMS 2.0 from SQL Server 2005 Express to 2008 R2 Standard

    Jeff,

Thank you for the quick reply.

So my understaing is then that the Store Manager and Store Operations appl. at the POS workstations and / or the back office lanes all connect directly to the Server SQL Server (requiring CALS)? I was under the impression there was only one direct connection from the server appl. to the DB server and all transactional calls to it were through RMS. I was told that the application on the individual workstations only connect to the Express version they have and the main application running on the server (which in turn is the only connection to the DB of record on the server).

Is what I was told incorrect?

Is there a particulare flavor of the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition I need (Open license, etc.)

Are you saying that each Express on the workstations connect to the Main SQL Server directly and that would constitute a connection (even if they all use the same login) and thus would require a CAL?

Just trying to reconcile what is legally required based on the actual way RMS is supposed to be configured.

Again, thanks for the quick reply.

    Brad

Re: Upgrade RMS 2.0 from SQL Server 2005 Express to 2008 R2 Standard

    Shaydz,

Easy question first, to upgrade to a newer version, insert the CD or click on the download and select Upgrade from an older version.  Of course you should backup your database first.

RMS does not include the CALs (Client Access License) for SQL.  The Express version does not require CALS, whereas all other versions do.  So you must purchase a CAL for any machine that coenncts to the SQL Server. So at least 10 CALs, plus any Manager stations that do not run POS.

Now if those 10 lanes are spread amoungst multiple stores and are using Express at the store level to communicate to HQ, you would need the # of stores for a CAL count instead.

Instance name will remain the same,

No need to upgrade to 2008 at the workstations, they will commicate just fine.  Do it on your next hardware upgrade cycle.  We have clients that are running the even the older MSDE at the POS and talking for 2008 R2 servers.  (XP with 512 RAM)

    Jeff
