Speaking of iPhones, research implies that $5.9 billion has perhaps been spent on iPhone repairs since the original was launched in 2007. The phones are extremely fashionable, but are considered to be fragile and somewhat of a fussbudget, also as costly to repair. learn more at matchfinancial."
Hi Gary,
I also appreciate your thoughts on this. And I hope you didn't take my statement about "old clunky machines" as a dig on you or your company. I was referring to Windows Mobile/CE in general. We have also been selling these devices with our software on them for quite sometime. I am offering an unbiased opinion on the hardware platform as I have worked extensively with both, I am not going to go into saving money today vs tomorrow or sex appeal b/c I was using the same ammo when we didn't have a solution that runs on iOS/Android. I think that anyone who has ever used a win mobile device for any length of time would agree that they are constantly in need of support. I mean come on, how many times have you had to troubleshoot simple wireless connectivity issues? Android and iOS on the other hand are so easy to use and configure that my grandma has one. And if a win mobile device is an electric drill this app combined with easy to use hardware is a fleet of workers with electric drills ;)
I am in no way suggesting that anyone attempt a store wide inventory with a camera scanner. Again- Honeywell and Motorola make industrial devices with integrated 2d scanners, there are also bluetooth scanners that will physically attach to your device.
Theft,ok, well maybe you have me there, everyone wants an iPad and it may be a bit of a hotter target when it comes to theft, and retailers wanting to use it in their shops ;)
Adam,
I appreciate your thoughts.
We don't deploy old slow clunky machines, you may have us confused with someone else :-) We make it a practice to listen to our customers as you do and also make sure we are thinking of more than "sex appeal" when it comes to solutions. Saving $$ today doesn't mean saving time and money after 1st day of purchase. We have gotten nothing but rave reviews for the handheld solution we deploy, the majority from whom are avid ipad and iphone users. Most of our customers don't mind an electric screwdriver for hanging a picture or two, but thank us for providing them with a drill when they have 5000 sq feet of product to inventory and label etc.... The repeat purchase after initial purchase speaks volumes to this.
2D barcodes not being used by many retailers, that I get, but 2D barcode scanners capabilities to omni-directionally scan any barcode at great ease, that's where the value is. When I product research and scan with my camera I can use my linear camera scanner on my phone but to expect a customer to do this during an inventory or pre-sale pricing...
I bring my tablet into stores all the time in plain sight (price checking, kids playing, reading etc...) so the thought of my kid or I having one in hand when we leave draws no looks, whereas if they had Targets MC75 in hand...
Thanks for your points.
Hi Gary,
These are all good points but we do have an older legacy system with all of the features/points you are listing out(newestech.com/.../mobile-pos) However we have been listening to our customers for the last few years about what they want. Instead of trying to shove old, slow, clunky devices and software down their throat we thought we should give them what they wanted.
I have also addressed your points, when talking about the new system, below.
Your'e right- Most smart phones are not ruggedized. However there are a myriad of cases designed to ruggedize a smart phone. And if you do want to pay big bucks for a ruggedized enterprise class device like what you are suggesting Honeywell and Motorola make these with Android and integrated scanners.
As for two hand scanning- this may be an issue for some which is why we like the Socket line of scanners, one of which will attach to most devices. not to mention that the Honeywell and Moto devices running Android have integrated scanners.
We do in fact sell quality scanners, we only recommend and sell products that we have tested and stand behind. We also don't push technology on customers that will not cause them to realize any added value. 2D barcodes are not used by many retailers these days for product labeling, but for the ones that do we have that functionality available.
You did raise a good point with theft. However I don't think this is a problem with the devices but instead employees who should not be leaving their tools lying around. In reality though I think most would put a smartphone device in their pocket and a tablet is usually larger than an enterprise device so staff would be just as likely to notice the tablet "walking out the door" as they would the enterprise device. Sometime bad things do happen though, good news is you can buy 5 iPod touches for the price of one enterprise device.
That's a great thought that a lot of people have because of the mass use and ownership of smartphones. A couple of things to think about though.
How rugged is your smartphone? - Seen a lot of cracked phone screens from 1 drop in non retail, non cement floor environments. Will it withstand multiple 1.2m (4ft) drops to concrete across all operating temperature ranges?
How many hands do you have to hold the smartphone, a bluetooth scanner, the product you're scanning, etc...? Making it a two man job doesn't save any time or money.
What quality is the scanner on the smartphone? Multiple attempts or first time scan. Taking the time to line it up perfectly or omni-directional lightning fast scanning? Does your Android device have integrated high motion tolerance 2D area imager with omni-directional scanning? Again, time and money.
What is the likelyhood that your smartphone or tablet will walk away? Pretty inconspicuous to walk away with a smartphone or tablet. A customer walking out with an "industry use only" handheld is a little more obvious to your employees. It's also a lot easier for a thief to sell online without drawing attention.
Industry designed handhelds address all of the issues I've raised above. You can't say those things about nearly all smartphones or tablets that one might want to use.
Happy to talk more with you about this.

We are in the process of building this app out. Currently we have inventory count, po creation and receiving as well as label printing. We will eventually have sales as an option and all of this is speaking with RMS in virtually real time.
I think it would be beneficial. Bluetooth barcode scanners can be found for around $50 range. I'd rather buy a few inexpensive scanners than one $400 data terminal/scanner for physical inventory. It may also be handy for receiving & printing labels.
