Advise regarding on premise topology change

We currently have a single-server, 2016 instance.

We are looking to expand this to a three server topology:  SQL, IIS and Async Services.

Can anyone offer any insight into the best way to approach the change?

Is it best to keep the existing server and move the Web and Async Services (for example) or should we build an entirely new set of three servers and migrate the CRM database?

    Hello Gordon,

You can always increase or decrease the existing Dynamics CRM Deployment.

My suggestion would first add Dynamics CRM server roles on the other servers by connecting to the same database. If you find everything is ok, you can remove de server roles or maintain them on the single-server you have. You don't need to migrate the databases, just grantee the connections on all servers like a normal installation.

"Configure. To add or remove one or more Microsoft Dynamics 365 server roles, right-click Microsoft Dynamics 365 Server, click Uninstall/Change, select Configure, and then click Next. Follow the instructions that are on the screen to select or clear one or more server roles."

    Cheers!

I would first install SQL Server on the new server. Backup and restore the databases to this new server.

You can follow the instructions from there:

    srmscrm.wordpress.com/.../how-restore-the-mscrm-organization-databases-on-the-new-computer-that-is-running-sql-server

Next step would be to setup your async services server.

Install CRM on that server and add the required roles. Test that this is working.

Finally remove the unnecessary roles from current server using Add/Remove programs.

    One note.

I am not sure if you are using Virtual Servers or actual servers, but If this were me, I would get three new server and set them up, and then decomission the current server after verification that everything is working proper:

Install new SQL Server, Install CRM Server with Front End Roles on New Server 1, Install CRM Server with Back End Roles on New Server 2, Backup and Restore CRM databases to new SQL Server, Run Deployment Wizard on CRM Server to import Organization to new server.

This might be a little more work, but it is a clean installation with no unnecessary windows server roles.

    Hope this helps.
