Frank's right (of course)
If it is a 'new' module, is that dictionary even installed on the existing local clients? If there is no change to the client you _could_ just switch between ODBCs, but I have never seen that work out. It's too hard to switch back and forth and pretty soon your production company is messed up.
RDC is a much better way to go.

Yes, identical environments would work. But my read of David's test environment indicates it is not identical to the production environment because he says they want to 'test a new module' on the dev box.
We have a test enviroment that is identical to our production environment. We copy the live backups to the test and reload all the GP databases including the Dynamics database. Since our Dynamics databases and db structures are exact matches on both servers it is possible for a single GP client to access both test and live by building different ODBC connections on the client. We used this approach in GP v9 and GP v10. It took some effort to get the passwords to work.
However, we removed the test ODBC connection from virtually all our client installations because there is no easy way to tell if you are attached to production or to test in this identical copy. It would be very easy to mistake the test server for live and enter production items in the test server. Now, almost all of our users are denied access to the test environment to prevent mistakes.
Nope. It's because each GP instance uses a separate DYNAMICS (system) database and you can't use the DYNAMICS db from one instance for accessing a different instance.
Thanks for the feedback.
I was hoping I could just point the existing client at the dev server, but I guess not.
If it were me, I'd have them RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) into the dev box so you don't have to install a separate instance of GP on each machine. Otherwise, you need a separate instance of GP on each workstation, along with a separate ODBC connection to the dev box.
