A modelstore contains all customizations and compiled code for an environment. You might want to import just the missing elements that your model was overriding. Modelstore can also be imported, but that brings over everything. If you import that, it means it is overwriting all customizations you have done within that environment.
You may have ID conflicts as well in case you are talking about different environments which were not created from the same source environment initially.
If that is the case, you need to fix your SQLDictionary for table and field ids before synchronizing the Data Dictionary once the modelstore is imported. I have written an article about that:
