Moving Management Reporters - 'encryption key'

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

I move several management reporter to new servers before but not one without the encryption key.   Any suggestions,  the setup was done by someone else.  The key isn't documented.    Any magically encryption key finder or updating/changing key on existing and using the same key on new server ?

Any suggestions is welcome,  Im still pouring through documents to see if I can find the original key

    Sorry for the late response.. end up not carrying over the old reports.   They were not necessary, so using new server with new keys.

    Hi Michael:

    If you have time and a test instance, you may want to try the below tip on how to reset the password for the master key.

    https://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/233040/how-to-change-sql-server-master-key-password/233041

    ALTER MASTER KEY REGENERATE WITH ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'password';

    I haven't tried this myself but If I had a predicament such as yours, this is the first thing I would try.

    Keep us posted.
    Have you contacted Microsoft?
    Regards

    yes, I used those instructions many times.. the difference is I had an encryption key prior..  no encryption key this time.

    I tested it via export and import.. but I'm losing all the historical reports... so encryption key is needed
