GP 2016 Web Client

We are considering upgrading GP to the web client vs the desktop install but we are receiving mixed messages about that. Would anyone be able to share their experience with the web client version in terms of functionality, errors or problems they faced and ease of use?

Thanks

What is the reason for moving to the web client?

There are always a number of issues and they vary from install to install.

    Hi Bill,

From a business continuity perspective, having a web client will mitigate the risk of not being able to access our computers if we were not allowed to the building. Also, from IT perspective, it is less maintenance and easier than a desktop install.

If this is the case, have you considered moving to a GP cloud provider like Njevity (njevity.com) or RoseASP (roseasp.com)? Both offer the GP as a subscription service and with the web client as the primary way to access the application. I highly recommend any of the two providers and you can talk to Chris over at Njevity or Linda over at Rose to hear their perspectives. Njevity has built all their business around GP and the web client.

If this is not something you are interested in, you can always host GP on Azure with the web client as your primary method to access the application. I've done over 40 of such implementations and have not heard much complaints about web client. Typically, the issues revolve around ISV products and whether or not they have any known compatibility issues.

    Hi Lamisse

The user experience on the web client is a little different. For example the HTML5 web client only allows one window to be accessed at a time. All windows are opened in the centre of your screen and overlaid. While it is possible to switch between them, you cannot have two windows open side by side.

Other features and functions also might not work on the web client. For example: GP Power Tools company colour themes don't work because Microsoft have not implemented the commands that change colours in the web client.

Do you use Management Reporter or FRx? They don't work on the web client.

I would check with every Microsoft and ISV module you use to see what works on the web client.

    Hi David,

Thank you for the response and the info. We do use Management Reporter and the multi-window access is something we use a lot.

This has definitely made our decision easier.

    Thanks again.
