How can I build an assembly of items and have it reference a particular item in the assembly with the actual cost of the entire assembly associated with it?

When building an assembly, if you want to reference one partciular item with a cost associated to that item, how do you place it in the assembly? Does an assembly's item lookup codes need to be in a certain sequence? How does a Purchase Order reference the assembly and what item in the assembly does it reference? Does is reference the top item in order or does it have something to do with the Assembly Lookup Code or Description?
