Chart of accounts and tracking expenses and revenue

Hi all,

I am setting up a new company which contains at least 17 cost centers (CC) and 32 projects (P) which are in 5 sites (S).

I am new to microsoft dynamics so was a bit outstanded when i found out that GP includes CC in the account number creating a significan amount of work (creating new accounts) and an explotion of accounts.

So I have done a bit of reading and have come to the following auto recomendations:

1) Only use 4 digits for accounts.

2) Use analyitical accounting and set up a tree which contains CC -> P.  I use numbering for everything (CC and P) so that the first digit on the P indicates the site which I can latert total for either profitability analysis or variance analysis.

As I said I am new to GP so unsure if there are some limitations on my approach or lack of understanding the system from AP and AR  perspective.

The question here is

Does anyone sees a problem with this approach? if so which one? what I want to avoid is an explosion of accounts, I think more than one chart is too many accounts, all my analysis are going to be done in excel using the "connections" functionality in it.

Thanks for your answers.

Roger

Under the Financial series, take a look at the Mass Modify tool that is available.  This may speed up the time to create the many accounts your organization needs under this scenario.  Note: you may still want to explore the use AA or some type of project system for tracking this as dimensions like Project can often times create a difficult to use chart of accounts in any system.
