Payroll Taking Too Long for close to 2000 employees

I have a client who is trying to process a pay run for close 2000 employees which usually takes around 3-4 hours to complete. Does anyone also have this issue, or is there a way to make the payroll process not take as long? Also, sometimes we get those dreaded 'FP couldn't close' messages or the “An open operation on table ‘UPR_TEMP_Local_Wage’ has an incorrect record length” error message before GP crashes and the pay run has to start over. Can anyone suggest what can be done to speed up the process and to prevent these errors?
