Alias POS vs Store Manager (RMS 2.0)

Posted on by 780

I have just begun to use the Alias feature and have discovered an odd (in my opinion) dynamic between POS and Store Manager. Placing an alias (another unique upc code) under the alias tab does work, where both the Item Lookup Code and the alias will correctly work on the POS station, however when I scan the alias in Store Operations Manager, the correcty linked Item Lookup Code is not displayed. As I understand the POS software, when an Item Lookup Code is not found, then the POS looks in the Alias table and then displays on the register the linked Item Lookup Code. Why isn't the same logic used for the Store Manager? When an Item Lookup Code is not found, it brings up the Find item table with the next closest item lookup number.

Is there a setting that I am missing in the configuration of Store Manager for the item lookup where the alias is used too?

    Hello Grier,

If I go to Inventory | Items in Store Operations Manager the Lookup states "Lookup Item Lookup Code"; and therefore this will not search the Alias or any other field when looking up items.

Here is a link to the Product Suggestion page if you feel this can be improved:

    https://mbscms/customersource/productsuggestions/productsuggestion.htm

Another option would be to check the "Always display 'Find' window for items" option in Manager | File | Configuration | Options | Item Options.

This would then bring up the Find Items screen when searching for items; and you can check the Alias check box in addition to other field(s).

If you are performing a Physical Inventory it appears that if you add an alias count, and then add another alias count, it will show the item lookup code on the physical inventory and sum the counts.

However, I can see where this could lead to issues as you wouldn't know which alias' were count as it does not show this information.

    Hopefully this helps.

    Todd

RE: Alias POS vs Store Manager (RMS 2.0)

Fernando, I mistated something in my question above. When you have an alias and you scan the alias number while in Store Manager, it searches the store manager database only in the Item Lookup code table. Store Manager seeks the closest item lookup code to the alias and displays that item lookup code properties. On this page I "could" click the "find" button and then do as you suggest and look for the alias.

It would seem to me that the Store Manager software should behave the same as the Store POS software, whereby it searches first the item lookup code table, once finding no matches, then searching the alias table for any aliases linked to the searched for lookup code. Instead Store Manager opens the next closest item lookup code -- which has no relationship to the scanned alias.

This behavior poses another question. The reason I wanted to use the alias feature is that when I have for instance several very similar items, usually from the same vendor, I would like to reduce my check in time and use only one UPC code (the items may only vary by color like a key chain etc). In the past I would have to print lables and apply the one UPC to all the different variants. With the alias I can use the UPC codes that are already on the product by placing the UPC codes in the Alias tab. This is my ultimate reason for using Alias's. If someone could explain how this will affect our end of year Inventory Counting I would like to learn form someone's experiences. How in this scenario would I be able to capture accurately the Alias product for Inventory purposes.

Or should I not use the Alias feature in this scenario. Thanks.

Hello Grier - the item list will only let you look up by the columns in the list - to lookup by alias, click the FIND button, in the FIND window, checkmark the ALIAS box on the left, scan the ALIAS in the top left field, click the find button  OK; hope this helps.
