Countless Issues with Multi-Select Option Sets

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Have any of you worked with the new Multi-Select Option Sets a lot? If so, have you had issues pretty much doing anything with the fields?

Here is a list of the issues I have encountered with Multi-Select Option Set Fields:

  • They can't really be manipulated with JavaScript
    • In fact, any time I add code to a multi-select field, the field literally breaks. The drop down will no longer appear.
  • They are not available for business rules
  • They are not supported with most integration/data migration software
  • They cannot be imported via Excel in CRM
    • It adds NEW options to the option set containing the multiple options separated by a semicolon

Anyone know of any workarounds or resolutions for the above issues?

I've been using Multi-select option sets. When merging 2 entities (in my example Contacts) it's showing the Option set Code instead of the Label. Anyone else having this isseu?

I was writing and I found with your same answer, it is completely adjusted to the resolution I have made of the problem. Thanks for clarifying it in a better way

Multi-Select Option sets can be manipulated just fine through javascript. I tried this just a week ago and the addOption/removeOption js functions behaves as expected on multi selects.

A limitation that does exist is that you cannot add options into the option set that don't already exist as valid options. So for instance you can't use an empty optionset field as place holder and fill it with custom on-the-fly generated options as they were not valid in the first place. This worked in earlier CRM versions (works in 2011, but don't know if this is a new restriction with Dynamics Crm 9 or if it came around earlier than that).

Well, there are issues.. They are probably known issues, but it does no make them go away:

For the time being, I guess you still have to work with lookups/single-select optionsets in those situations
