DNS Alias or SQL Server Instance Name?

Hello:

Does anyone know if there are any issues with using a DNS Alias, instead of the SQL server instance name?  I'm asking not just about GP but about its integrating apps, as well.

For example, Scribe's instructions on moving its internal database to a new SQL server specifies to use the new SQL Server instance name.  No mention is made, as to whether it's okay to use a DNS Alias.

Thank you!

John

And, actually, I should correct what I just said about Scribe.  The instructions specify using the new SQL Server instance name, if you're creating a new database to restore the "old" internal database into.  The instructions, though, don't make mention if connecting to the internal database should only be done through a SQL Server instance name, instead of a DNS Alias.

    Hi John,

I've been using aliases for my GP server for several years and have switched twice SQL server during that time... We do use SmartConnect which is like Scribe,  and we don't have any issues with it..  Removed alsoall the trouble about user passwords.

We had to upgrade our GP to a new box and used a DNS alias. Though, we had lots of user authentication issues, especially for 3rd party software like Greenshades. After long research it worked after we used the actual server name in the ODBC driver rather than the DNS alias.

    Hi Raghid,

Yes.. 3rd party ISV products can be a culprit since they are not all equal when it comes to connect to SQL server.. and you never know exactly how they manage security handshake. Best is always to find software that supports Windows Authentication or Kerberos.
