Hi Folks,

Hope you are doing Good !!

Q. Can MS Dynamics support automated order processing like cXML based transaction (Punch-out). Also EDI (850/810) and XML generation for customers.

I did a little research and found that

By default Dynamics AX 2012 doesn’t support direct EDL (Electronic Data exchange) through cXML based transactions. You can buy them through various ISV's.

EDI is Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the computer-to-computer exchange of business documents in a standard electronic format.

EDI 850 :- Is the purchase order.

EDI 810 :- Is the Invoice.

We need to buy a third party solution for that, but we may map the external software for EDI transport through AX. More Info

This Forum clearly says NO.

And this blog by some ISV.

If, your answer is "Yes". Could you please help me out ?

    Hi Mark,

Thank You so much for replying quickly,

Firstly, we are using 2012 R3, so OData is not in picture (still thanks for the info).

Secondly, My finding were right, it is good to buy solution from ISV rather than "re-creating the wheel, metaphorically"

    Thanks again.

EDI is a Text based, fixed column width, flat data format. Microsoft Dynamics AIF consumes only XML based documents... But, if you want to go through a huge undertaking of parsing the Text based EDI file with an X++ file reader service. Basically you would be re-creating the wheel, metaphorically. Biztalk or Data Masons VantagePoint , or other ISV products, take the text based EDI transaction set and first converts it into an ANSI X12 XML version of the EDI document then maps/transforms EDI fields to the appropriate Dynamics AX fields. With Dynamics Ax 2012, the AIF service & schema class structure performs validation and error trapping . With Dynamics AX 7 (now simply Dynamics AX) the AIF framework is being deprecated. AX will now use X++ and or C# based  service classes that will utilize OData or JSON scripting to read inbound XML documents into dynamics AX tables. http://instructorbrandon.com/walkthrough-keeping-it-simple-with-customer-invoices-and-dynamics-ax-aif/

So to answer your question: Dynamics AX does NOT support consuming Text based EDI documents or even XML based ANSI X12 EDI documents out of the box. There must be a step to transform the ANSI X12 EDI or other XML format to comply with Dynamics Ax schemas for consumption by the AIF Services

a long, difficult and risky process to accomplish this without utilizing a 3rd party ISV middleware product will be a waste of money and time. There are any number of ISV EDI transformation solutions that provide Industry-specific packages for EDI transactions.
