FAQ: Importing .MPP, Project Online with Project for the web, Project Home behavior

This is a sticky to answer frequent questions about the topics below. Feel free to suggest additional FAQ points in the thread.

  • How does importing .MPP files work?
  • How can Project Online data be used in and Project for the web and vice versa?
  • How do projects in Project Home behave?

Answers:

  • Import from .MPP is currently only available for vanilla Project for the web projects residing in default environment and the import is done from Project Home.
    • Stay tuned for importing to P4W prod, sandbox, and ProjOps.
  • All projects launched from Project Home (project.microsoft.com) open up either in Project for the web's Fluent UI React, the Project for the web model-driven app, or Project Operations as follows:
    • Projects in default environment open in Fluent UI React.
    • Projects in a production or sandbox environments open in the Project for the web model-driven app.
    • Project Operations projects open in the Project Operations model-driven app.
  • Project Online projects reside in SharePoint. There is no OOTB way to sync POL to P4W or P4W to POL. Use the Schedule APIs to accomplish this.

    There is a third-party platform that solves some of the limitations listed above: https://www.pdms.io

    More specifically, it:

    - allows importing to any Project for the Web / Project Operations environments, named or default

    - provides two-way synchronization capability between Project Desktop MPP file and Project for the Web / Project Operations schedule

    - supports migration and synchronization of assignments to named and generic users
