CRM 2013 and Reporting Services SQL Versions

We have an implementation that is going to use existing infrastructure but it is unclear in the IM guide if the following is supported. The scenario is that there will be three servers. 1. CRM Server on Windows Server 2012. 2. SQL Server for CRM will be using SQL2012 3. SQL Server for CRM Reporting Services Server will be on a third server running SQL2008 R2. The question is: Can CRM run on SQL2012 while the Reports are on SQL2008 R2.

    Hi Japascoe,

Going through the Implementation Guide - Planning you can see the following being specified for both your SQL Server installation as well as the Reporting Services :

Any one of the following Microsoft SQL Server editions is required and must be installed on Windows Server 2008 (x64 SP2 or R2) versions or Windows Server 2012 64-bit-based computers, running, and available for Microsoft Dynamics CRM:

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Standard Edition, x64 SP3 or R2 SP2

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Enterprise Edition, x64 SP3 or R2 SP2

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Datacenter x64 SP3 or R2 SP2

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Developer x64 SP3 or R2 SP2 (for non-production environments only)

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2012, Enterprise, 64-bit SP1

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2012, Business Intelligence, 64-bit SP1

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2012, Standard, 64-bit SP1

As the guide does not offer any interdiction of using different versions of SQL for your 2 servers (one that handles the CRM DBs and the other server that handles the Reporting) - as long as the 2 versions are mentioned in the above list - I would say that the scenario you've described is Supported.
