Moving Warehouse- What Steps to be Taken?

Hi,

We just started to use Business Central in Jan 2022 and we are moving our warehouse next week to a bigger warehouse location.

As far as I understand I believe we are just going to use same location name- but will have different bin locations for items.

We are currently using Lot/Expiry for most products and use FEFO set up.

I thought we can just create new bins and do item reclassification to transfer items.

Is there anything I'm missing?

Thank you,

I have the same question (0)

Personally, I’d create a new location. It will be easier to ensure the inventory has moved completely.

if you’re moving a lot of data and run into any problems part way through, it is quite conceivable you could lose track of what has and not been completed successfully.

The setup requirement of a completey new location is minimal. location card, warehouse employees and inventory posting setup.
You’ve got to do bins anyway. So 5-10 mins of setup will make the migration more transparent.

    Thank you!

Once I duplicate the our location to a new one with inventory posting setup & new Bins, I can just do item reclassification to transfer and would that be good enough?

Yes, a reclassification journal will work. It will be time consuming to create with item tracking but it will work.

If there are a lot of tracked items to move, the data can be imported with configuration packages but that requires very careful testing to ensure your tracking entries get created correctly. You’d probably want your partner involved.

Whilst sticking to the idea of a new location being better, I guess it’s appropriate to consider the downsides too. If all your inventory moves to a new location, purchase and sales orders will need locations changing which isn’t the case with your original proposal.

How much of an issue this is depends on your volume of transactions.

First, you must evaluate your facility's efficacy and organize your current inventory. Communicate all the plans with employees, customers, and vendors.
