How to move from D365 Legacy Storage Model to the new Storage Model?

Hi,

We are currently buying our D365 user licenses from a Microsoft Partner and due to some reason, we want to buy the user licenses directly from M365 admin center instead of buying them from partners. We are currently on D365 legacy storage model plus we have bought additional database storage of 10 GB which is also legacy storage.

Now, if we buy the user licenses directly from M365, that will be considered as a new fresh license, and will come up with a new storage model? The below table explains what we currently have and what we will get when will buy the new licenses. So my question is, will this transition will be automatic at the backend? We just have to purchase fresh new licenses and stop purchasing the old legacy storage model? As we don't need additional storage as we will get enough with the new storage model.

Please if someone can guide or suggest anything in this regard would highly appreciate it. I just wanted to confirm that by following these steps we will not end up with any trouble with our D365 instance. Thanks.

@CarolinaMogas, the article mentions "Customers who renew existing subscriptions can choose to continue to transact by using the existing offers for a certain period of time."

Can you confirm how long Microsoft will allow renewals of legacy addon database storage licenses for customers?  Will there be a cut off point?  If so when?

    Hello!

Thank you for raising this Waleed.

In order to transition to the new capacity model, you'll need to have at least one the new Dataverse Capacity licenses or none of the legacy entitlements. The Dataverse licenses are the following:

    • Dataverse Database Capacity
    • Dataverse Log Capacity
    • Dataverse Log Capacity

If none of the above licenses are acquired for the tenant and if you still have a legacy add-on such as the Additional Storage Capacity, Additional Production Instance or Additional Non-Production Instance, the tenant will remain in the legacy capacity model, and the calculation of consumption will be displayed as an overall storage number.

If you currently have one of the legacy add-ons and you wish to transition to the new capacity model, you will either need to wait until you reach the expiry date of these legacy subscriptions or you can attempt to reach your partner in order to understand if it's possible to cancel them and acquire the new capacity licenses.

Our public documentation also explains in detail what are the criteria to transition to the new capacity model - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/capacity-storage#licenses-for-the-new-storage-model

Nonetheless, let me know if this answered your question, or if there's anything else that we can confirm!

    Thank you,
    Carolina

    Hi Carolina,

Thanks for the above. I did exactly what you have mentioned above. We are now on the new storage model. We were having an old legacy model storage addon which is why we were on the old one. We canceled that additional storage addon and transitioned to the new storage model. Thanks.
