explode Bill of Material Lines without production order

Hi,

We are in process of migrating to d365f&o and we're having issues with some of our items with bill of materials.  We have a kit that has a bill of material of 2 items that we bundle together on the front-end - ex. red hat and green hat.  There is no route needed on the item as no manufacturing is being done.  These are the requirements that we'd like to meet.

1. we want to preserve visibility of sales of the kit (red and green hat bundled together) in d365 reporting

2. we don't want a separate production order to generate to pick the red and green hat, we just want the wave pick to tell the picker to pick the red and green hat along with any other sales order line items that don't have bill of materials or routes

The solution we've been told is that we have to explode the BOM lines into individual line items when we import our orders which fulfills #2 but not #1 above.  Just curious if anyone knows of an easy solution that might meet both requirements.  Thanks!

I have the same question (0)

Why don't you import your kits as saleslines and then you run the explosion on the same orders so you have the traceability?

I am assuming you set the kit  as phantom with the components in it.

if you raise a sales line for the kit and then run the explosion you will have full traceability of all the kits exploded( 1 st requirement) and then you still have the components you can pick against the SO

Hi Aparisi82, I appreciate your response.  Can you elaborate on what you mean by "raise a sales line for the kit"? My understanding is that once you explode the BOM, the kit lineitem disappears so we would lose visibility to the sale of the kit header (and it would look like the customer purchased those components individually). They are not currently phantom BOMs but probably could be if needed.

    Thanks!

If I remember this correctly , the sales line for kit will remain with quantity zero and the 2 lines exploded will be linked ( using a field reference )  to the kit line so you can workout the kit sold using the bill of material.

I don't remember if you need to set the kit as phantom to do this or you can just explode the sales line for kit directly.

Aparisi82, yes, you are correct!  I hadn't noticed that the original lineitem was still there with no quantity.  I'd have to investigate how the lines are linked for reporting but it seems like that would work.  I appreciate your help!  The only issue left would be to see if there's any way to automate the BOM explosion.  We will have an integration to feed orders in from our front-end system programmatically as well as customer service reps potentially entering orders manually.  Ideally, I think we'd want a customization to automatically explode the BOM when the lineitem is saved but I'm not sure if we have the resources/budget for it.  Does anyone know of a way to trigger the BOM explosions automatically without customization?

That would be an interesting question , I would investigate if the sales lines can be updated ( exploded ) via data entity but not sure.

Maybe the experts can feed back in.

If a data entity exist that allows that via update , a PowerAutomate flow might be developed..

Hi @Aparisi82, yes, it has. I'll accept your response as the answer and post a new question to try to get suggestions on how we could automate the bom explosions. Thanks!

Hi Andre Arnaud de Calavon, Sorry I have a stupid question... Any future questions I ask are going to be for d365f&o, how do I know what forum to put it in?  I've been using Finance b/c I thought maybe that was for d365f&o but my questions will seem to get randomly moved to other forums.  I'd like to do it correctly the first time but I'm having trouble navigating how a specific forum correlates to a specific Microsoft product. Thanks!
