POS 2009 remote clients cannot connect to the server

Posted on by 155

Ok, so we have used POS 2009 once this year already - we have a conference that we put on each year, and this year we went from Dynamics RMS 2 to POS 2009 for a myriad of reasons, largest of which is ease of use for the volunteers that have zero training in POS systems that we put behind the machines every year.  That system consisted of a server running Windows server 2008/MSSQL server 2008 and the clients, all running Windows 7.  We were using workgroup authentication for this setup, as configuring a Domain for a 4 day conference is, in a word, absurd.  All of this worked fine, and we had no issues.

However, we have a road case that we set up with two POS systems every year that goes to remote locations.  One of these systems acts as the server - it houses the database and is the "primary machine," and the other machine is supposed to connect to it and act as a POS register.

They are both on the same workgroup, they both have the same user (Road), with the same password, and the RMSSecured file is setup the same (similar) way to the working setup that we had at our main conference.

Both machines are running windows 7, and currently, have the firewalls off so i can verify that that's not the issue.  I've tried every port that I know of, including both 1433 and 1976, and I always get the following error message:

"To complete this operation, you must be logged on to this computer using an account that is an Administrator on both this computer and on the database computer. However, you cannot use the account that is named “Administrator”. For more information, see “About system administration from a register computer” in Manager View Help.

If you are unsure how to proceed, switch to the database computer, log on as an Administrator, and then perform this operation there."

Which is exactly what I've done.

If i change the computer name in the RMSSecured.config file the error message changes to indicate that it cannot find the machine - which would be expected.

If anyone can help with this, that would be awesome.

Thanks,

AVDev

POS 2009 uses windows user accounts and passwords for Login authenication. It then links these to the database within sql server and gives sql server permissions.   When you change the RMSSecured file the accounts dont get created and therefore your login fails.

I would change the file back to default  and then use Change Connection from the login screen.  This process will take some time but that is because it is creating the accounts.

For this issue, one of the best resolutions that I have found is to:

Create a new administrator user on the server machine and the register at the same time. Make sure that the accounts are administrators and identicle in every respect.

Before using them, completly restart the computer and then log into the user on both computers and attempt to access the database.  Once this is done, then you should be able to change the server computer user back to your normal login.

    Best Regards,

    Shawn with Microsoft Retail Support.

Hi AVDev, I am in the same mess with exactly similar configuration. running the database & register on windows 7 and have been struggling for days to connect to the database. So far nothing worked. Did you resolve the issue by any chance. Plz share if you were able to solve it! Many Thanks. Ashish

    Hello,

Instead of chaning the RMSSecured file, I would suggest changing the connection in the front end to see if that works better.

try enabling the Administrator account which by default is disabled in Windows 7. Make sure the password is the same on both computers. Login to both as Administrator and try again. Yuo may have to use the IP address instead of the head computer name.

Also - if ANYONE has any ideas on this one - any ideas at all, please share, because i've got very little time to resolve this - and i haven't heard back from my microsoft rep yet eaither.

If i don't get it resolved soon, both machines will be going out to the next location as seperate entites without a shared database, which is, well, kinda stupid.

I'm sure i'm missing something downright obvious, but I've pretty much run out of areas to check at this point.

    Ok - update.

I uninstalled POS 2009, and reinstalled it.  Ran the latest Service Pack.

Now, when i leave the RMSSecured file alone, it is able to connect to the local database just fine, but if i configure the RMSSecured file to connect to any other database or machine, real or not, it brings up the login window, and upon trying to log in, times out, ignoring the timeout settings in the RMSSecured file completely.

Keep in mind, i have done NOTHING differently in the configuration of this installation than i have done to any of the other machines tht we have used, with the exception of the target database, of course.

    This makes no sense.
