Error Creating 32-bit ODBC for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013

I am getting following error while creating 32-bit ODBC on a system which has Windows 8 installed:

Image

I am trying to create 32 bit odbc using SQL Server Native Client 10.0. The client is using Microsoft Dynamics GP SP1 with SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Will be grateful if anyone of you could help me in resolving this issue.

The simple solution here would be to create a GP 2013 package installation file and then install GP with that package. As a by product the DSN will be created.

In first instance I tried creating installation package with DSN but because it was giving error that's why I thought of creating DSN separately but that ended up in above error.

Is it just this workstation with the problem? Did you run the installation package as administrator? I would check the SQL Server configuration on the server and workstation make sure TCP/IP protocol is enabled. It looks like this workstation is trying to used Named Pipes as opposed to TCP/IP.

Have you enabled Named Pipes? If not, enable it and try again.

Its seems to be the Name Pipe and TCP/IP connections for your SQL sever is disabled.

Go to your SQL server installed machine and enable the Name Pipe and TCP/IP  connections.

To enable Name Pipe and TCP/IP, follow the below link.

    www.blackbaud.com/.../tkenablenamedpipesandtcpipconnections.htm

After enable Name Pipe and TCP/IP, restart the SQL server services then login into client machine where you got error message. In this server, open SSMS(SQL Server Management Studio) to connect the enabled Name Pipe and TCP/IP SQL instance. If the connection is successful, then create a ODBC 32-bit connection in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe.

    Hope this helps!!!

We don't want to be using Named Pipes for traffic unless it is just for testing. All traffic should be done using TCP IP. My guess is that you do not have TCP IP setup on the SQL server or you have a firewall that is not allowing access to port 1433 or 1434.

    Haroon,

I presume you are getting this error when you are creating the actual 32-bit DSN, rather than trying to log in to Dynamics. Also, that other workstations are not having a problem logging in. If yes, then you are, of course, not having a Dynamics problem.

    A couple of other questions:

    Can you ping the server?

Is the computer name is not resolving? If you try to connect using the IP address, does it work?

    can you connect using sqlcmd?

is sqlsvr for sure an exception in windows firewall

Are you using a named instance of SQL - this would mess up the DSN if not entered correctly.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

I am going to ask a strange question here but you did launch the 32bit version of the ODBC connection manager to create this correct?  If not that may also produce a similar error.
