Advise - RMS 2.XX & Windows 10

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi

Need advise - moving a two lane RMS store to some new i5 64bit hardware. Should I go right to Windows 10 or stick with Windows 7 pro for the OS? Will RMS 2.x have a problem with Windows 10 64 bit and what database engine should I use express 2008 or higher?

Dj

    Hi, Please help.

I have done installed the following sequence for (RMS Headquarter, SO, CU5-2.0.2000), SQL Express 2012 and SQL 2005 Backward Capability on SurfacePro3 Windows 10 64bit . Question1: is this the correct sequence?

Question 2: I am getting error message: "Run-time error '429': ActiveX component can't create object" when trying to launch HQ, SO -please any idea?

    MSD***2*_HQ_enUS                  Application (restart)

    MSD***2*_SO_enUS                    Application (restart)

    Retail2.0-KB2887502                     Patch (CU5) (restart)

SQL Express 2012 (x64)                 standalone install (restart)

SQL 2005 Backward Capability x(64)     (restart)

[/quote]i had that issue before when i installed the Store manager and HQ manager on my laptop with windows 10 - 64 bit and connecting to rms server on windows 2012 r2 , i got the same msg u have when register the dll if u still have it msg me back i think i have solution for it  :)

i think i found the solution about this error , i try it and it working for me , before do any update for service pack , hotfix , or even starting installing the SO / HQ Manager you need to install 1st Feature Pack for Microsoft SQL 2005 , you can find it in link below :

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24793

Hope it will help you well

Okay, duh! I didn't realize that the post from January WAS the answer. I installed the SQL 2005 backward compatibility, restarted, and voila! It works. Thanks!

I am having the same runtime error 429 issue on a Windows 10 Pro PC. Installed RMS 2.0 SO and HQ, no SQL server installed (SQL server is on network server), ran CU5 update, none of the files will open. All provide same runtime error.

Any updates on this issue since January?

That is actually a fairly common and different bug in the system.   When the POS screen is in "window" mode the POS screen is somehow pushed off the screen.   You will see the login screen but not the POS screen behind it.    To fix this do these steps:

    -Login to the POS

-Press Ctrl-F6 to open Display properties window

    -Click Transaction screen tab

    -Click Window button

-Reset top 2 fields (showing -32,000 something) to 0

    -Bottom 2, set to 1024 and 768

    -Click Ok, then OK again

-That should put it back, sometimes you need to do that a second time.

-Click maximize on the POS screen to make it fit.

You can fix that permanently by setting it to full screen mode.

Thanks for the reply. I believe the issue with POS not working I was having was due to the peripherals POS is using, i.e. printer, drawer, etc.  POS would open but then become unresponsive and if you closed it using the Task Manager it wouldn't reopen.  I didn't have the luxury of checking that out furhter though.  Store Manager would open ok and was reponsive.  FYI, our techs have tested Win 10 and RMS all the way from the base version to CU5 and haven't had any issues with it.  I downgraded back to Win 7 and it seems to be working ok after that.

You should be fine, just update to CU5 before you use it.   I don't know why they said to update to CU5 while in Win 7.   I have installed it quite a few times in windows 10 and applied all updates with no issues.  See my response above.

Has anyone run into the situation where you're using an older version of RMS (2.0.0123) and the computer upgrades to Win 10?  The previous posts said to do the upgrade to CU5 while in Win 7 then upgrade to Win 10.  I don't have that option now.

I have installed RMS 2 and SQL Express 2012 on a few Win 10 Home PC's without problems.  There is one .dll that doesn't register, but I believe it has to do with add-ons, which I dont use.   Make sure you install all of the service packs and latest CU update, along with the SQL backwards compat for a better experience.

Unless there is a compelling reason to switch to Windows 10 I would not recommend doing so. If you do decide to there are a couple things to keep in mind: RMS will not install/run on Windows 10 without being at version 2.0.200. So you would need to install it under Windows 7, bring RMS to 2.0.200 then upgrade the OS to Windows 10. Additionally you will need to install the SQL Server Backwards compatibility update (this is also a requirement for Windows 7 with SQL Server 2008 and newer). SQL Server 2012 has worked well in a Windows 10 environment with RMS 2.0.200
