Safety Lead Time and the Work Date

Hi:

For the first time, I tested the use of the "Safety Lead Time" field in the Item Card.

I was able to successfully do so, but I had to change the "Work Date" field in My Settings to be a future date -- 10/15/2024.

For this one item, I was using the "Order" Reordering Policy and 1M for the "Safety Lead Time" field.

The Sales Order Order Date was 10/15/2024.  Since the "Work Date" field was also 10/15/2024, the Purchase Order's Received Request Date for the line item was 09/15/2024.

Again, this is a successful test.

But, during my first unsuccessful test, the "Work Date" field in My Settings was 09/06/2024.  During that test, the Received Request Date was 08/07/2024.

Creating a Purchase Order in the past, from a business standpoint, wouldn't make much sense.  That's why I had to change the "Work Date" field to a future date, to get a successful test.

Why would the "Safety Lead Time" field make me use a future date?

Thanks!

user needs to understand what each date field in BC controls. Like Ben says, if BC defaults the date to the work day, and user set up a lead time of 1 M. It is like telling BC that I need the item today, but it will take 1 M for that item to be delivered. This won't be realistic and BC will plan he purchase date in the past.

you could refer to the below for more info dates used on order promising

Safety Lead Time is not causing you to change your Work Date.  It is telling you the suggested Order is going to be late.  If you are using the Planning Worksheet you will see a warning about the date being in the past.  The Req. Worksheet does not have the Warning field, but filtering on Order Date can show you product that will likely be late if the Order Date is in the past.

If you need product today, and you have a 1-Month cushion on when it is in stock verse when it is needed, you should have ordered the product over a month ago.  If your demand is immediate (i.e. you don't know ahead of time), and your set with a 1-Month safety lead time, you are constantly going to get suggestions to order in the past.

A resolution to this is to use a Lot-for-Lot policy with a Safety Stock Quantity.  This allows you to consume the Safety Stock and have the system replenish your safety stock rather than delaying your demand source (aka Sales Shipment, Prod. Consumption, etc.).

The other environment dependent solution is to enter a realistic date on your demand source, such as the "Requested Delivery Date" on the Sales Header for a time in the future.  Not all companies have this luxury, so again it is environment dependent.
