Business alerts are great to notify someone that an event has happened and therefore notify the user they should to go run a report to see the detail. Such use may be that a stock item has gone below a threshold or a customer has placed an order today.
They are not ideal to be used as an automated report delivery system, as there is little scope for getting good looking output from them.
Tim.
Hi Ven and Kerry, thanks but i have spend much, much time setting up 30 plus Business Alerts and have some great ones, i just need to format the reports that GP sends out as they do not align and are difficult to read. Perhaps Microsoft could help here as they should know?
I have yet to find a good use for the built in Business Alerts. Data driven SSRS is great but not available in all editions. Requires Enterprise or Business Intelligence editions. It is not included in Standard unfortunately which is what most use with GP. You can get around it with some fancy SQL queries to build your own distribution lists into the process bypassing SSRS completely and sending directly from SQL Job but far more complex.
Jerome:
Business alerts are great to notify folks about key thresholds in a hurry so that the responsible parties perform tasks necessitated by the same. For example, IV Reorder comes to mind. The message and report that lets you type text in the message body in addition to attaching the query results as a text file is the best an administrator can do with BAs.
Have you considered using SRS Reports in combination with a data-driven subscription?
Best of luck
Ven
