Remote Connection to Database

I've successfully installed Dynamics POS 2009 locally and connected registers to it. Now, trying to configure remote connections is giving me a trouble. I receive the error

The database computer could not be contacted. The firewall on one of the computers might be preventing the connection, or there may be a problem with the way the network or workgroup may be setup.

I've disabled the firewalls to rule that out. I've port forwarded the 1976 and 1433 ports on the server computer, and in my router. TCP/IP is enabled in SQL Server Manager. Both computers are using the same user account (just like it was required for other registers to connect). I've plugged in the public IP into the change connection on the remote computer that is attempting to connect, and it still gives that error.

    RE: Remote Connection to Database

    Hello Sean,

    Thank you for your question.

Please note that POS 2009 has not been tested for remove/VPN connections to the database, and is not supported by Microsoft.

If you are able, I would recommend making the remote locations independent of the other stores and run their own database locally.

    Thank you,

    Scott Wardzinski

    RE: Remote Connection to Database

Sean, I strongly recommend looking at Retail Management Hero as there is a means to upgrade to this platform. Retail Realm has made a great product that will make things better for a lot of retailers out there.

  • RE: Remote Connection to Database

RMS is supported until 2021 not sure when end of life is for 2009. I'm not concerned for my time, I do this for free and to help. If you are trying to install and use either POS 2009 or RMS in a retail environment you need to be pci compliant and be able to maintain the software. If you have no access or a partner who can provide updates and hot fixes to get you from the base install to a version that is pci and emv capable for pos 2009 or RMS 2.0 by today's standards? You are wasting your time as I mentioned, it can't be done and RMS at this point in time is a better investment in your time than 2009.

  • RE: Remote Connection to Database

I thought RMS 2.0 was unsupported and POS 2009 was an upgrade? My apologies if I am wasting your time. But I greatly appreciate you taking time to help me.

  • RE: Remote Connection to Database

You may be better served using that MSDN and getting them going on RMS 2.0 since it's supported long past POS 2009 anyway? And if you have no access to source or a partner with access to source to obtain updates and or hot fixes your wasting your time and or the customers because you can't be Pci compliant on the base version of either pos or RMS. 10 years ago perhaps but not since 2012 and the new pci and emv requirements? It can't be done

  • RE: Remote Connection to Database

No, no service packs or feature packs were installed because I don't have access to customersource. I have a MSDN subscription from BizSpark that gave me POS 2009 and they don't provide ANY updated for it. Just the base install. I'll see what uninstalling it does and if it works, I'll report back when I'm back from vacation, next Sunday.

    RE: Remote Connection to Database

Was Sp2 also applied Sean to Pos 2009 along with "any" Microsoft and Windows updates? I neglected to ask that. In my experiences I find that if you choose to add any third party security since none are approved in the system requirements as supported anyway? Do yourself and the customer if applicable a huge favor. Don't install them or configure them until after the install of the software and hardware has been completed and tested nobody in this process should be accessing or downloading anything anyway and if there is a concern about virus or malware download and install security essentials until your done. They are typically more accepting of software installed and running before you install them than trying to install with them already running.

  • RE: Remote Connection to Database

I'd give it a try after you've uninstalled node 32 then. That's just me, since it's the only variable.

  • RE: Remote Connection to Database

Windows 7 Professional, and yes, team viewer works and rdp does too. The firewall was turned back on, I turned it off only to test it. There are no third parties except for ESET Nod 32 Antivirus Business Edition. I've configured it to let ports through and the software folders themselves.

  • RE: Remote Connection to Database

What Windows Version are we discussing? Can you connect using a third party like Team Viewer 11 perhaps just to test? Turn the Windows Firewall back on btw and what other third parties are there on this box? Something is missing from this information I believe Sean, as it shouldn't be this difficult.
