Using special characters when creating customer numbers

Good day,

I'm looking for documentation in the use of special characters when creating customer numbers and item numbers. An example, D#1PARTS50135, this customer number was created GP accepted this, invoices were done, payments applied, but can this be regarded as best practice.

Regards

Rosemary

    Hi rcr123,

Using special characters is not prohibited by GP, however, I would avoid the use of special characters.  Just because Dynamics GP supports the use of special characters does not mean this is a best practice.

Dynamics GP is frequently integrated with other products and tools, and there are definitely no guarantees special characters will be supported universally.

The benefits of using special characters must be weighed against the potential for integration with other system, and any necessary efforts required if special characters are not supported.

Hope the above information is helpful!

    Kind Regards,

    Roderick

As Roderick says, it would be best to avoid special characters.

Badly written code could have issues with a single quote character (') if it is passed to SQL Server without being "escaped".

The GP Report Writer can have issues with a back quote character (`) in a key field as it has specific meaning in the report writer.

    Hi Rosemary

To help others who look at this forum thread, please can you clarify what you mean by "it was".

    Thanks

My apologies, it was helpful in that in helps me to better explain to users why special characters should not be regarded as best practice.

We use third party software, we have not had any issues but we are planning an upgrade.

Apart from customer numbers we have item numbers and descriptions where 2x4 is sometimes entered as 2*4, they think it's easier in terms of data entry.

Thank you both for your input.

    Regards

    Rosemary
