Has anyone done an extension to move an item from a standard item to be batch tracked.

Really dont want to go and create new codes. Client didnt want these batch tracked and now changed their mind.

If anyone has done this via extension, would you mind sharing advice. Happy to pay for the service.

Debbie

In standard Business Central, once an item has ledger entries, you cannot change the tracking configuration (e.g. enabling lot tracking) because it impacts inventory valuation and historical traceability. Therefore, enabling lot tracking on an existing item is blocked for data integrity reasons.

    Customization option:

Yes, it's technically possible via extension, but it requires:

    • Updating the Item Tracking Code on the item record.
    • Carefully reworking validation logic to bypass standard restrictions.
    • Ensuring future transactions (and existing open documents) are compatible.

However, this comes with data risk and is not recommended unless managed by a skilled partner with a full validation and rollback strategy.

➡️ Best to contact your Microsoft partner for a safe and auditable implementation.

Try this out in test system first:
    1) zero the inventory of this item, through Item journal
    2) create a configuration package with Item table, and only the field Item Tracking Code, un remove the Validation for this field.
    3) Import and apply the excel with the new item tracking code value for this one item.
    4) Post back the inventory for this item through Item journal with the Lot Numbers.

If You don't need to do any corrections on historical entries, all should be good.
if there are a lot of such items, then it is hard to predict if any corrections will be needed, but You test out some most likely scenarios in the test system after the changes.

Better option would be to create new item card, even if it is painful and time consuming. You can rename the old card to some letter Z_xxx so that these kind of items are at the bottom of the list, and block this item, after the inventory has been moved to the new card.
