Does sales order demand trump all settings for MRP

We're noticing that no matter what we do to prevent an item from creating a planned order of any type, if there's an open sales order with that item it will generate a planned order. Is there any way to stop this from happening?

Create a coverage group, set it to Manual and then assign this coverage group to the item. MRP will skip that item.

I'd need it to be item specific, not sales order specific, there's no way to do that?

In AX 2009 you can change sales order type from sales order to journal. SO of type journal are ignored by MRP. I'm quite sure it's the same in AX 2012.
