Bad performance on a fresh AX 2012 installation

Hi,

We are facing below performance issues in a fresh AX 2012 installation.

 1)   Compilation doesn’t complete even after 14 hours. In case we use Axbuild then it takes approx one hr.

2)    AOS service is taking more than 3-4 hours to start.

3)    After compiling application from Axbuild, there is slowness in opening AX forms.

Regarding Windows servers configuration which are hosted on AWS (Amazon Web Services).:

 1)    AOS and AX client are installed on one server. Configuration of server is

        RAM                      -              16 GB

        Processor   -              Intel(R) Xeon () CPU E5-2676v3@ 2.40 GHz 2.40 GHz (Virtual Processors -4)

System Type             -       64-bit Operating System, x-64-based processor

   2)  SQL Box – SQL services and Reporting services are installed on one server. Configuration of server is

        RAM                      -              16 GB

        Processor   -              Intel(R) Xeon () Platinum 8175M CPU @2.50GHz 2.5GHz (Virtual Processors -4)

Important points:

Ping from both servers is fine and no packet is lost.

Servers are hosted on AWS (Amazon Web Services).

The utilization of CPU on SQL box is 2% and Memory consumption is around 20% (while the AOS service is in starting mode).

Please let me know if you need more information.

    Hi prkr,

Can you check if e.g. a virus scanner is running in the background? To find more, you can use some monitoring tools.

    Hi Andre,

Any specific monitoring tools are you talking about ?

FYI - we are facing so bad performance when utilization of CPU on SQL box is 2% and Memory consumption is around 20% and utilization of CPU & RAM on AOS box is also very low.

    1) AxBuild is the fastest way to compile the entire application and the recommended way to do it. Compile time will be different depending on the performance of the system. In my experience it should take about 20 to 30 minutes to compile.

    2) This is absolutely too long, in my experience, it should take between 5 to 15 minutes or so to start the AOS service. If it takes 3 to 4 hours, it seems your virtual servers are slow i.e. not getting enough processing time (I am no VM expert).

    3) This is normal behaviour for opening forms the first time only after a build. The system caches the forms, and other elements, in a client cache. So the second time the form is opened, you should see an improvement.

Have a look at the disk speed on the SQL server, if your disks are slow AX will be slow.

Using Crystal Benchmark, our test server disk speed is around 800 Mb/s Read, 600 Mb/s Write

Also I would try to ping the SQL server from the AOS server just to make sure there is no delay there.

I would also say a full compile with axbuild should take no more than 20-30 mins.

I would check disk IOPs first and then check if resources are utilizing properly or not.

I have faced this issue recently where one of my cloud VM suddenly started performing slow (it was working fine earlier) and after 1-2 days it was back to normal.

I had opened up a ticket with support but they unable to provide me any RCA for it.

    Check with support.

Just an update - we have now installed AOS on SQL box to test. It is performing a quite normal and take only 1-2 mins to AOS service restart. Things looks pretty normal now.

Problem is only on AOS communication with SQL when they are in different boxes. Your advises are welcomed in this regard. Thanks for your valuable comments by the way.

Is there any antivirus or firewalls security implemented between both server?

To dig into this performance issue, suggest to use process monitor and capture hang dumps to compare the call stack between dumps to see what is using most of time. Also need to check performance counters to see if any abnormal symptom.
