What is the SQL database format used by RMS ?

Hi everybody!

I have a situation with a client who doesn't have access to their database password (even the password for the default 'sa' user account has been changed) since their RMS installer went out of business without warning.

It's not yet a problem for everyday use of their POS equipment, but they want to run the Management software on another PC because their main database was put on the POS PC (I know!)  It's not a good situation when they want to add stock items/do inventory etc. during opening hours.

I've been trying to find software to reset the SQL server database's password, but the utilities I've found don't seem to recognise the .MDF file as being SQL 2000 or 2005.

Does anyone have any idea which version of SQL the RMS database is formatted in or what I might try doing to get my client out of this situation?

We'd prefer not to have to start from scratch inputting all the stock items!

Thanks in advance

Paul.

What happens if you use the RMS SO Adminstrator application on the server?

When you are actually "on the server" you can use the "use windows authentication" option. If this lets you connect to the database, you can then backup the database, so at least you will have the items in a backup file... Then, worst case, you could blow away SQL Server and reinstall (write down the password this time), and then create a new db from the backup you created.

Thanks EricjRW -- I'll give that a try later this week when I'm around at my customer's site.

    Webcharm:

Here's something else that might help, assuming the configuration information has not changed...

When you do a RMS Admin / File -> Configuration / Database tab , the number of asterisks displayed is the number of chars in the pw string... That might help you or the customer remember/guess what the system admin (sa) password is...

I just used this method on a system that was showing 8 *s...

It took me one try to get the password!

That'll be handy for when my customer forgets their next password  ;)  , but they didn't have any input into this one and so wouldn't have a clue what it might be.

From your idea I now have full access to the database using the Windows Authentication method. Next step is to install RMS on another PC to try making and connecting to a new version of the same database. I'll post the result when I'm done, but hopefully it should be plain sailing now.

I'm really grateful for your help EricjRW. Thanks!

    Glad to help...

And I'm also curious as to how things work... So do post back.

Even you can check password in RMS Administrator registry. That will be the plain passowrd i mean it will not be the encrypted. just check it..

Interesting. I thought I tried a registry search before... Guess it's time to give this another try.

    Thanks for the tip.

There are also some freeware that show you what is behind the asterisks.

You could also use a Transact SQL statement to reset the password and be done with it.

I've had to do this on afew occasions when a hacker tried to break into the SQL server.
