Hi Espha,
The feedback I usually got, from these types of questions in the past was following:
"The CRM product group doesn't always have time to test all the latest update packages from the stack technologies. However since SQL Server 2012 is supported with CRM 2016 (see support.microsoft.com/.../compatibility-with-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2016) then, you should be able to use also the latest SP for SQL 2012. If you run into any issues due to this, you can reach out to support and ask for assistance and support should be provided.
