Hi,
Is there a way to auto assign territories to the existing as well as new accounts / leads / contacts, based on back-end territory > states mapping / configured.
without creating a workflow ?
can you let us know, how you design the relationship between state and territories ?
For existing record, you can either create a on demand workflow or console applciation to update the value.
For new record, depends on your design, so let us know how you design the relationship.
Have you looked into Maplytics? They have an add-on solution for Territory Management: www.maplytics.com/.../defining-geographic-regions-sales-territory-dynamics-crm

Without workflow or any configuration you need to go with 3rd party Add-ons like Maplytics.
