Can't connect through Dynamics GP or the ODBC System DSN

I am using Dynamics GP 2015 and SQL Server 2012 Express. When I go to setup the ODBC System DSN for Dynamics GP the connection test always fails with this message.

Microsoft SQL Server Native Client Version 11.00.2218

Running connectivity tests...

Attempting connection

[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0]SQL Server Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF].

[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0]Login timeout expired

[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0]A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.

TESTS FAILED!

I have enabled named pipes and set the port in the tcp/ip setting to 1433. I've also added inbound firewall rules for that port, udp port 1434 and to the sqlserv exe and the sql browser exe. The environment right now is I just have it setup on my personal computer and trying to connect from the same computer. Once I get it working on my computer I will have it installed on a friends computer and he will be using it for a bit from his own computer. Right now I only have the sa account and that's what I'm using to try and connect with this stuff. I can send screenshots of any of the windows if they are needed. Hopefully this is the right place to post this.

    Hi Link1733

Yes you are in the right place to seek assistance with your issue.

Are you setting up a 64bit or a 32bit ODBC driver?

Dynamics GP uses a 32bit ODBC driver.

Not sure which operating system you are on, but try typing in ODBC32.exe to launch the 32bit ODBC setup window

Make sure that it says ODBC 32bit at the top of the window and then click on the system DSN tab

do you see your Dynamics GP driver there?  If not you can create it from this window.

If you do please let me know and I will give you more trouble shooting tips.

For the most part problems like this are because a 64bit ODBC driver was setup.  Also you can disable named pipes as Dynamics GP uses TCP/IP

I'm using the 32 bit setup window for this, so I guess my other question is when it asks what sql server I want to connect to should I be typing the ip address and port \ servername in? Because so far I have been typing in my computername\servername.

Also I do a Dynamics GP 2015 in the System DSN tab. It's one that I had setup when trying to get it to work.

    Hi Link

Good that you are using the 32 bit ODBC driver.

Launch MS SQL server management studio and connect to your sql instance where you want Dynamics GP. Note the name of the server. If you installed on the default instance it will be server name. If you installed in an instance it will be servername\instancename.

Right click on the SQL server and select properties and then connections.  Make sure the box is marked to allow remote connections to the server.

In the ODBC setup window make sure that you have the server name correct.  You can also use the IP address if this doesn't work.

In your ODBC driver setup, make sure that you unmark all boxes with check marks.  Try again entering the SQL server name that you see in SQL Mgt Studio

Ok so this is what my MS SQL server management studio looks like https://imgur.com/a/dnKcE so is the SQL server name stuff I type into odbc setup steelballrun\dynamicsserver?

Yes that is what you would enter  steelballrun\dynamicsserver

When setting up the ODBC driver, connect with SQL authentication and then on every setup window unmark any box that has a check mark in it.

    then try the test

Still won't allow me to connect. I also tried it with the ip address rather than the computer name and that still didn't work. I'm half tempted to reinstall the server stuff and try it then because maybe I just messed something up somewhere when I was trying to get it to work.

Reading the error message it says it cannot connect with the sql server, have you verified that the sql server is indeed running?

Check Administrative services to ensure that SQL is running--just a thought

So the only one that isn't running is SQL Server Agent but I haven't been able to get that one running and from what I could tell because I'm running express it installs it but I can't actually run it or something like that?

You are correct, that SQL Server Agent will not work with SQL Express.

One more thing that I can think of that you can try.

Launch the SQL Server Configuration Manager

    for SQL Native client configuration

You should have in this order:

    Shared memory Enabled

    TCP/IP  Enabled

Named Pipes  either enabled or disabled

Other than what I have told you before, I couldn't trouble shoot this without looking at it.

Maybe someone like Mariano Gomez or Derek Albaugh can chime in on this.

I actually just got it working! I must have messed some config thing up somewhere but I ended up just reinstalling it and now it's working as intended. Thank you very much for the help though! You helped me clarify some of the questions I had about the sql server stuff.
